Seychelles brings “La Fete de la Francophonie” to new heights

Seychelles brings “La Fete de la Francophonie” to new heights ( Seychelles is coming out with new approaches to put “La Fete de la Francophonie” back on its feet. One week before the official launching of “La Fete de la Francophonie” planned for March 19-24, the committee spearheading “La Fete de la Francophonie” is fine-tuning the program, so that it comes out as a build-up to the 2015 event. Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, said that “La Fete de la Francophonie” needs to be crowd driven, and this is the hope by this time next year. Minister St.Ange also called for the need to give “La Fete de la Francophonie” a new impetus.

“Over the years, we`ve witnessed fewer people coming down to attend activities organized for `La Fete de la Francophonie.` Events like `vin et from age` was an activity that many Seychellois looked forward to when the event was initially launched, but it is no longer proving to be popular, and also the general public is not getting access to these events. This year the Organizing Committee has proposed some adjustments to the program. New events are being proposed to bring back the crowd in Victoria. Next year it is hoped that we can make it even more spectacular,” Alain St.Ange, the Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said.

Minister Alain St.Ange was speaking at a press conference of Seychellois press to unveil the program of the 2014 “Fete de la Francophonie.” The press conference was also addressed by Genevieve Lancu, the French Ambassador accredited to Seychelles; Fouad C. Laulloo, the Director of Alliance Francaise; and Miera Savy, the Chairperson of the “La Fete de la Francophonie” committee. Genevieve Lancu, the French Ambassador to Seychelles, said that the French Embassy was supporting Minister St.Ange`s call to give a fresh coat of paint to “La Fete de la Francophonie.” She explained that the French Embassy is bringing the “Buffet Campagnard” as a new activity to this year`s festivities. The “Buffet Campagnard” will be a garden party at the Botanical Gardens with a French buffet, and this will be one of the highlights of the 2014 “La fete de la Francophonie.” Genevieve Lancu said that the Botanical Garden had been chosen for the event`s venue because of its impressive spectacular settings.

The “Buffet Campagnard” will take place in three phases. Joe Samy will be given a recognition medal for his immense contribution in the arts and culture. One of the ten thousand trees offered by La Reunion Island to Seychelles will be planted in the Botanical Gardens. It will then follow with animation by a children`s choir and classical music performed by the Conservatoire of Performing Arts. Invited guests can then enjoy a truly French buffet offered by the French Embassy.

After the French buffet, Genevieve Lancu outlined that the French Embassy wanted to offer Seychelles something that is of prime importance to it as a nation.

“The people of Seychelles and its leaders are fervent believers of the blue economy concept. The French Embassy in collaboration with Deepam Cinema will screen the Film `Ocean` directed by renowned French director, Jacques Perin,” Genevieve said.

The first screening will take place on March 21 by invitation only. The second screening on the following day will be exclusively for school children and will run in parallel with the official opening of the first Alliance Francaise branch on Praslin. The branch will be located at Vijay International School at Baie Ste. Anne Praslin.

“We believe that because the Alliance Francaise at Mont Fleurie is today considered as being far from the public, and, therefore, it is not easy for the public to benefit from the services being offered. Minister St.Ange`s famous quote is if you cannot go to our centers, then our centers will come to you. It is in this spirit that we are opening this Centre on Praslin. Eventually we will move to La Digue and other districts on Mahe, such as Anse Etoile and Anse Boileau,” Fouad C. Laulloo, Director of Alliance Francaise of Victoria explained.

“La Fete de la Francophonie" is also about the traditional marathon. The marathon is once again on this year`s program. The starting whistle will blow at Eden Island roundabout on Sunday, March 22.

The event also to look out for this year is the Bazaar Francophone which will be offering a wide spectrum of French recreational games for children and adults, French food, and artisanal products. The French bazaar will take place in the garden of the National Cultural Centre.
