Green Globe celebrates first member in the Philippines
Mr. Bauer presented the prestigious certificate, along with the Green Globe Sustainability Leadership Award during a festive ceremony, held at the hotel yesterday. This world-class beachfront resort identifies and promotes sustainable strategies, and has demonstrated corporate social responsibility for the past few years. The certificate is a milestone for the Movenpick Hotel Mactan, and cements the hotel`s commitment to sustainability.
Sustainability is deeply rooted in the Movenpick Hotels&Resorts Group worldwide. The hotel itself was redesigned to minimize energy consumption, using natural ventilation and daylight elements. Throughout the entire property heat absorption is reduced, while the amount of incoming daylight is optimized – both for lighting purposes, and to take full advantage of Cebu`s warm and breezy tropical climate.
LED lighting is installed throughout all areas, resulting in substantial cost and energy savings. Energy usage in the guest rooms is further reduced by regulating air conditioning room temperatures to 24 degrees Celsius and implementing keycard sensors to turn off electricity as soon as the guest leaves the room. A rainwater harvesting system collects water for the hotel`s swimming pool. Guests are encouraged to participate in the hotel`s green initiatives.
As part of their CSR program, Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu conducts a quarterly beach clean-up, supported by all staff members. These activities save marine life, as each year hundreds of thousands of sea birds become entangled in marine debris. They lose their legs, cannot swim or feed. They either starve to death or drown. Entanglement is not limited to birds, but affects all types of creatures, including whales, sharks, dolphins, seals, and turtles.
The audit for the Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu was conducted by Farnek, the accredited Green Globe auditing company for the Middle East and Asia.
