The green ethos driving Colombo’s flagship hotel
“The Green Globe recognition reiterates the hotel`s commitment to infuse the triple bottom line philosophy into our daily operations, taking sustainability to the next level,” said General Manager Rohan Karr. “To us, being green goes beyond rhetoric; we put it into practice and want to permeate the message of preserving this planet to as many as we possibly can. This is why we are proactive with the younger generation. We want them to experience nature, be responsible in disposal and waste management, enjoy the fruits of being green and be ecologically conscious.”
Spearheading Cinnamon Grand`s Green Agenda are four key areas, namely, energy and water management, waste management and recycling, conservation and community awareness. Specific measurable strategies are in place to define the hotel`s green footprint. A dedicated Green Team and associates are very involved in defining the hotel`s Environmental Action Plan, which is reviewed on a regular basis.
Intent on cascading the `Green Ethos` even more, all 501 rooms at Cinnamon Grand sport Green Cards, encouraging guests to support the hotel`s green initiatives, including Environmental Wisdom Cards, a pack of twelve beautifully boxed cards, available for purchase, to benefit the research activities of the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka.
Corporate Social Responsibility has played a fundamental role in building the Cinnamon Grand Colombo. True to the John Keells Group pledge `I Will Care`, the hotel is immersed with the community, and supports numerous projects. Under the banner “No Time to Waste”, the property launched an environmental educational initiative on the recycling of e-waste. Workshops at local schools are being conducted by Cinnamon Grand`s Green Team. The hotel`s Cancer Hospital Project adds the dimension of employee volunteerism, which not only has staff members volunteering at the children`s ward once a month, but also presented the longest walk undertaken by a single entity in Sri Lanka to collect Rs 1.8 Mn for the purchase of a theatre lamp and creating awareness on the debilitating disease.
