Seychelles Creole Institute to gain new status as the International Creole Institute

Seychelles Creole Institute to gain new status as the International Creole Institute ( A historical milestone is in the making at the Seychelles Creole Institute which is due to be renamed International Creole Institute (Lenstiti Kreol Enternational) by the coming weekend. This new status will elevate the current Creole Institute to its new mission of promoting Creole language and cultures in the Indian Ocean region and in the other Creole-speaking countries in the Caribbean and Americas. Furthermore, the International Creole Institute will focus its mission on the recognition of Creole as a language with a common history and linguistic development path.

The interest of the institute will extend from cultural, linguistic, scientific, educational, and sporting an economic development. This newly-acquired status will position the International Creole Institute as an extended arm of the Seychelles Creole Institute with the purpose of furthering the international dimension of its general mission based on the principles of promoting and of developing Creole, the Seychelles maternal language.

The creation of “Lenstiti Kreol Enternasyonal” was one among several projects of cooperation proposed during an encounter in July 2013 between a Seychelles delegation which was on official mission in La Reunion and headed by President James Michel and high-ranking officials of Reunion Island, represented by Didier Robert, President of Regional Council, and Nassimah Dindar, President of General Council of the island.

On October 28, 2013, a Memorandum of Understanding stating the intention to launch the International Creole Institute on January 10, 2014 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Commission, (IOC) was signed between Seychelles and its La Reunion Counterparts. The agreement is today bearing its fruit. A high-ranking delegation from La Reunion Island is heading to Seychelles to unveil a commemorative plaque for the International Creole Institute. This ceremony will be part of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) 30th Anniversary Celebrations taking place in Seychelles.

The unveiling of the plaque will set the ball rolling for the institute to embark on the launching of a regional literacy competition, the “Prix Antoine Abel.” The competition will be tabled to the Indian Ocean Commission and International Organization of Francophonie (OIF) for approval.
