Summer holidays in Mayrhofen

( Nature all around. Plenty of sport. Masses of entertainment.
Hikers love this place. Bikers love this place. Mountaineers are inspired by it. It’s pure indulgence. The upper Zillertal around Mayrhofen has a veritable treasure trove of holiday ideas
– inspiring hiking areas, picturesque alpine huts, welcoming traditional guesthouses,
magnificent biking trails and so many different ways to ‘get away from it all’ including paragliding
and climbing. If holidays are all about switching off and enjoying yourself, there are also plenty
of ways to while away the hours with sophisticated spa hotels and cosy, traditional inns serving
typical Zillertal cuisine.

As you gradually saunter up Zillertal to the magnificent mountaintop landscapes – past idyllic meadows,
through dusky mountain forests – you emerge on an upper alpine region peppered with captivating
escarpments and an array of alpine peaks. What better way to pamper body and mind than a brisk walk
around Mayrhofen along the upper Ziller glens. With some 200km of hiking trails there is plenty of
variety, plenty of impressive sights – naturally including original alpine huts, ideal for a hearty snack with
genuine Zillertal bacon and mountain cheese. The 372 square kilometre Ziller nature reserve is also a
hiker’s paradise. Accompanied by experienced guides, discover the natural beauty of an untouched
mountain region – family walks along ancient smuggler routes or to picturesque huts and alpine inns
such as the Berliner Hütte, are just a selection of the many highlights. To discover this magnificent
countryside there’s no need for any alpine experience. Enjoying a relaxing walk or taking to the peaks in
a cable car are as much a part of the enjoyment here as day trips and longer tours – the Adlerweg ‘eagle
tour’, the Berliner heights or the Via Alpina.

Extremely likeable, extremely bike-able
Enjoying this area doesn’t mean crossing the Alps like Hannibal. A bike ride around Mayrhofen can be
totally relaxing. Take the Zillertal bike trail – top quality, prepared paths almost entirely on the flat through
tranquil, secluded valley. If you enjoy the exercise there are some 225km of bike trails rising and falling a
total of 8600m, from leisurely rides to legendary leg-crunchers. Then there are classic rides such as the
trail up to Schlegeis Speichersee or the wildly romantic Zillergrund. Many of the routes can be
downloaded for GPS, but if you prefer guided tours a safe bet is always to join some of the local biking
enthusiasts as they know every nook and cranny up and down the Zillertal mountains and can point out
the best trails and prettiest huts. Some of the more thrilling trips: a ride – by bike or cable car – up to
Penken mountain and the breathtaking scenery of the upper alpine regions. Biking enthusiasts are never
disappointed in Mayrhofen, one of only a few must-visit locations in the Alps. This year the Jeantex Bike
Transalp tour will be stopping off in the area – on July 15 and 16 Mayrhofen will be home to the world’s
best known mountain bike competition.

Plenty of action in the valleys and the hills
To many people, the Ziller is no more than the river that gave the valley its name. To others it has better
claims to fame. With its crystal clear water, this mountain river has been home to sporting activities for
years. Canoe trips, rafting and exhilarating rides on a hydrospeed are just some of the highlights. But
there is also canyoning, taking in spectacular waterfalls and rock faces. Alternatively, if that sounds like
too much exercise there are plenty of mountain streams to discover – unwind, take an invigorating dip.
For mountaineering enthusiasts who also have a head for heights, the Mayrhofen is ideal. Famous way
beyond the local area, the climbers’ nature reserve starts at around 1000m above sea level touching the
skies at 3510m. But for the ultimate escape: fly like a bird – paragliding in Zillertal could not be better; the
thermals are ideal all year round.

Four inspiring reasons to come and relax in the mountains
Many people come to marvel at the mountains in Zillertal just to get away from it all and soak in the
tranquillity and serenity. Starting at the bottom of the valley in Mayrhofen, there are four offshoots:
Zillergrund, Zemmgrund, Tuxer Tal and Stilluptal – a harmonious blend of unspoilt natural scenery. It’s
the place to come, with hiking boots nice and snug and rucksack pulled tight, as you venture forth along
meandering alpine streams in pursuit of those four reasons to be here. Explore mountain villages like
Brandberg or Ginzling with their quaint little farmyards, the world of the history books – except it’s not, it’s
still here.
Then you immediately realise why you came here. It’s like a home-coming, at one with the secluded
valley, inspired and refreshed.

Tempting titbits and captivating cuisine
What would a trip to the mountains be without a stopover in a local tavern? Recharge the batteries with a
traditional Brettljause snack made with real Zillertal bacon, tangy mountain cheese and a fresh farmyard
loaf. Unforgettable, almost the highlight of the whole visit as you relax in aging wooden alpine huts and
soak in the breathtaking view of the majestic snow-clad peak. Down here in the valley things are much
more cosy – romantic inns of yesteryear such as the Griena, serving local Zillertal specialities. You must
try the local sausage, Bauernbratl, Zillertal doughnuts or a Buttermilchschmarrn fry. Gently washed down
with a Zillertal beer.
To really get into the Zillertal spirit, take a trip to the Mayrhofen alpine dairy where the tangy mountain
and meadow cheese is made from original alpine milk. Watch the dairyman at work before trying his
produce in the kitchen.
