Minister St.Ange attends UNWTO-WTM Ministers’ Summit in London

Minister St.Ange attends UNWTO-WTM Ministers’ Summit in London (Forimmediaterelease.net) The Seychelles’ Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, yesterday morning attended the 7th UNWTO-WTM Ministers’ Summit, held this year under the theme “How to bridge the gap between tourism and aviation policies.”

The event is held annually in parallel to the World Travel Market (WTM) in London.

Minister St.Ange was accompanied at the high-profile summit by the Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Sherin Naiken; the PR Manager in the Seychelles Tourist Office in London, Lena Hoareau; and the Director of Marketing of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands, Derek Savy.

Opening the summit, the Secretary General of UNWTO, Dr. Taleb Rifai, said that the aim was to encourage productive industry dialogue, especially since the meeting is one of the largest gatherings of tourism ministers worldwide.

Among many setbacks affecting today’s travel, the ministers discussed the visa issue at length which restricts easy access to certain destinations.

Speaking from the floor, Minister St.Ange said that instead of putting into place stringent measures which at the end of the day discourage travel to certain destinations, some countries should learn from others.

He gave the example of Seychelles which he said despite its size, has an open mind where visa is concerned.

“It is important for us, as a small country, not to have visa applications in place. We get many visitors to our country, and for feast occasions like the Eid Festival, people look for short holidays. They would always go for destinations that are easier to access,” he said.

“The non-visa option will simplify tourism in the long term.”

The panel also discussed ways that aviation can play its role to facilitate world travel.
