ICTP President unveils “Last 100 Metres” strategy for Green Growth and Travelism
The “Last 100 Metres” strategy leverages the investment possibilities made available by trading platform GATE Global Impact (GGI) to fund Internet access for remote communities (ImpactWIFI) and, in turn, bring Travel&Tourism jobs and development to those same communities through sector-specific funding on the GGI vertical, GATEtrip.
“In the remote and spectacular corners of Africa, in small islands, in rural networks across the planet, where villages will increasingly be connected to the global Web through ImpactWIFI, the potential for new Travel&Tourism products and circuits is enormous. And with this productive connectivity, there will be huge potential for investment and jobs in infrastructure, service education and capacity building that Travel&Tourism demand generates. This will provide an opportunity to breathe new life into fading rural communities and help slow the growth of ultra-urbanization, as well as create linkages with the new UN Sustainable Development Goals that will underpin the Green Growth transformation,” finds the strategy.
On learning of the “Last 100 Metres,” Ms. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, announced the Union’s support – as well as that of other African Regional Groupings – for this kind of innovative initiative that will trial in rural Kenya ahead of an Africa-wide roll-out.
