What’s on in Madrid (Forimmediaterelease.net) Madrid boasts one of the most extensive calendars of concerts, sports events, and exhibitions in the world. Take a look at a selection of the most important events programmed for the rest of 2013.

EXHIBITIONS

Captive Beauty. From Fra Angelico to Fortuny (May 21 to November 10 @ Prado Museum): the exhibition takes visitors on a historical-artistic journey through more than 250 paintings from the museum's collection, all sharing a common feature - their small size, reflecting their function as cabinet paintings and preparatory studies.

Surrealism and the Dream (October 8-January 12, 2014 @ Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum): this exhibition explores the influence of Surrealism on artistic sensibilities in general and the close connections between dream and image. It features works by various artists, including André Breton, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte and Max Ernst.

Velázquez and the Family of Philip IV (October 8 to February 9, 2014 @ Prado Museum): an exhibition featuring 30 court portraits by Velázquez and his contemporaries. All the pieces were painted between the artist's second visit to Rome in 1649 and his death in 1660.

Fernando Alonso (December 6 to May 4, 2014 @ the Canal Art Centre): this exhibition revolving around the famous Spanish Formula 1 driver will comprise single-seaters, trophies and personal items linked to his career.

MUSIC

Eros Ramazzotti (September 21 @ Sports Palace): the Italian singer presents his latest album, Noi.

Pablo Alboran (September 26-27 @ Sports Palace): the singer-songwriter from Malaga, a true Spanish pop idol, will come to Madrid to perform tracks from his new album.

Lang Lang (October 8 @ National Auditorium): Chinese pianist Lang Lang offers this extraordinary concert featuring works by Mozart and Chopin.

Bruno Mars (November 15 @ Palacio Vistalegre): the American singer-songwriter will stop over in Madrid during his Moonshine Jungle Tour.

Jamie Cullum (November 27 @ La Riviera): the English singer and pianist performs tracks from his latest studio album, Momentum.

SPORTS

San Silvestre Vallecana (December 31): the city bids farewell to the year with this popular 10 km race which attracts mass participation.

SHOWS

The Lion King (December 3-22 @ Teatro Lope de Vega): over 65 million people have already watched this musical version of the Disney classic set in the stunning fauna of Africa that was born in Broadway and is now being staged exclusively in Madrid in Spanish.

Lutherapia (October 1-13 @ Municipal Conference Centre): the Argentine group are back in Madrid to stage what they consider to be possibly their best show ever.

Mayumana (from October 9 @ Teatro Nuevo Apolo): famous for their percussion shows, the company returns to Madrid with Racconto a show commemorating their 15 years of success.

Alegría (December 18-22 @ Sports Palace): renowned troupe Cirque du Soleil return to Madrid with a production that has already been enjoyed by over 10 million people across the world.

OTHER EVENTS

SUMMA. The art fair of the art fairs (September 19-22 @ Matadero Madrid): this unmissable event kicks off the season and includes other unique events such as MadridFoto, an International fair specializing in contemporary photography which is aimed at private, corporate and institutional collectors.

Apertura (September 19-22 @ Around 50 venues): every September the ArteMadrid association of art galleries launches the new season with special opening times and a full program of activities.

DecorAccion (September 19-22 @ Literary Quarter): dozens of shops in the centrally-located Literary Quarter boast special decorations and the streets are filled with furniture markets and art installations.

Architecture Week (September 30-October 7): a whole week dedicated to the city's architecture, with guided tours of Madrid's most iconic buildings.
