Seychelles artist wins gold medal in Jeux de la Francophonie 2013

Seychelles artist wins gold medal in Jeux de la Francophonie 2013 ( Seychelles’ distinctive artist, Jude Ally, walked away with a gold medal in the painting category of the 7th edition of “Jeux de La Francophonie” held in Nice, France, yesterday. In his spectacular conquest, Jude has beaten the artists from France and Canada.

Jude is the first Seychelles artist to win a gold medal in the painting category at the games - he also gives Seychelles its first ever medal in “Jeux de la Francophonie” 2013.

The local artist’s paintings, “Xilophobia” and “Askari et le Dragon,” won the juries’ highest marks, placing him in first position – well ahead of his fellow contestants.

He also won the highest mark in the pre-selection process with Xilophobia and again with his second painting, Askari et le Dragon, produced during a three-day workshop as part of the “Jeux de la Francophonie 2013” competition procedures.

Jude’s paintings are strongly influenced by graffiti as well as weathering effects on posters found hanging battered and torn in many a dirty street. He also spent the last five years developing a form of visual expression to highlight the strong link between the issues in society and its needs – while adding his personal views and ideologies. Some of his works depicting these influences can be seen under “The Walls” label. His recent works show a more abstract persuasion as he is an artist who is continuously developing his techniques.

When called following his historical win, Jude who is still in Nice, said that he was astounded by the jury’s final decision but felt “overwhelmed at giving Seychelles its first gold in medal in “Jeux de la Francophonie 2013.”

This is the young artist’s second participation in “Jeux de la Francophonie,” and he was also representing his country at the 6th edition of “Jeux de la Francophonie” held in Lebanon in 2009.

The cultural delegation in Nice is headed by the Chief Executive of the Seychelles National Arts Council, Jimmy Savy.
