Chaaya Village Habarana demonstrates robust sustainability practices

Chaaya Village Habarana demonstrates robust sustainability practices ( LOS ANGELES, California - Green Globe member, the Chaaya Village Habarana in Sri Lanka, has been committed to nature conservancy and protecting the local communities for years. The property shares a number of back-of-house operations with the Cinnamon Lodge, and has implemented similar robust sustainable practices across all levels of the business.

Sri Lanka is identified as one of the most valuable biodiversity hotspots in the world, and at Chaaya Village Habarana all efforts are made to ensure that flora and fauna of the area are not impacted by its activities. One of the green initiatives at the resort is the production of environmentally-friendly paint, made of mud, saw dust, rice polish, brick dust, and cow dung. The traditional wood oven bakery is another exclusive initiative of this hotel. This wooden oven is made of eco-friendly material, including clay bricks, clay, quart rocks, and coconut shells, has a capacity to hold four trays of traditional bread, and provides a unique dining experience for guests.

A key contribution of Chaaya Village on the sustainability platform is the creation of awareness on local culture. The resort places great emphasis on historical, cultural, and natural site excursions in the region. In addition, guests are invited to join traditional activities offered by the property, promoting a better understanding of local rural life.

In line with John Keells Hospitality Group pledge “I Will Care,” the Chaaya Village Habarana focuses on a number of areas in its commitment to corporate social responsibility. The property donated roofing sheets to the Sangamitta Buddhist Pre-School, the only state-owned pre-school in Habarana. The Vocational Training Foundation for orphans receives essential items and lunch packages for the children on a regular basis. In partnership with the village, cleaning campaigns in the environs of Habarana, Habarana Lake, nature parks and roads, are being organized by the hotel team throughout the year.

The entire Chaaya Village team volunteers at the Horiwilla Native Hospital in Palugaaswawe to paint, clean, and meet all needs of the hospital. Chaaya Village indirectly assists the community, hiring entertainers, such as magicians, flutists, snake charmers, acrobatic troupes, the local oriental band, and the Army Officers band from Minneriya.

Over the years, the Chaaya Village Habarana has generated a number of innovative practices, designed to effect a positive change in the community.

Like a well-disguised tree with thirsty widespread roots reaching far and wide to drink from the closest brook, Chaaya Village Habarana lies sprawled across 27 acres of luxuriant land bordering a stunning lake. Habarana is situated 176 km from Colombo, in the heart of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle, and is part of the Anuradhapura District. The hotel’s cozy cottages, inspired by the typical thatched roof huts found locally, lie in clusters with low roofs and brownish yellow exteriors. The paint used is specially mixed with mud, to ensure the façade is in harmony with nature. A visit to Chaaya Village is a journey made for the love of nature, a journey that will lead visitors to experience many exotic paths.
