The Tourist Office of La Possession takes you on a “maronaz”

The Tourist Office of La Possession takes you on a “maronaz” ( From August to December, the Tourist Office of La Possession invites the public to go on “maronaz" in the footsteps of runaway slaves - a concept that ranges from hiking and history that will appeal to lovers of nature and culture.

A little history… runaways or “maronaz" is Creole and was the name given to the escape of a slave out of the owner's property in the colonial era. The runaway slave was called “marron," according to the term of Spanish origin, “Cimarron," which means escape, flee. The term “maronaz" has now entered common parlance and is more akin to a trip or a hike – an escapade.

Hiking, accessible to all, takes place on one or two days and will take participants on the steps of runaway slaves. The trails on the West Coast and Mafate, World Heritage (UNESCO) open a window on the history of these sites.

After the effort, comes the comfort! The “maronaz” will end around a curry cooked over a wood fire, in which walkers will meet for an exchange of experiences.

A touch of hiking and a touch of history, these are the ingredients to make a successful “maronaz” tour!
