Paper-cutting competition on the occasion of the Seychelles – China Day celebrations in 2014 ( Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture has met with Mr. Duan JianJun, a famous contemporary Chinese paper-cutting artist from Inner Mongolia Province, who was in Seychelles from July 30 to August 7, 2013 to conduct workshops for 19 art teachers from various schools in Seychelles and for 30 art students currently following courses in the field of textile and fashion.

Mr. Duan studied paper-cutting art form from his childhood, and he has accumulated profound cultural literacy related to paper-cutting art. He is known to have made new developments and breakthroughs in creating a unique style of paper-cutting by blending creative aesthetic connotations with the traditional paper-cutting art.

This third paper-cutting workshop in Seychelles was held in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy in Seychelles and the Chinese Cultural Centre in Mauritius under the Agreement of the Cultural Cooperation between the government of Seychelles and the government of the People’s Republic of China.

Paper-cutting is a Chinese National intangible cultural heritage item and an art form which shows vitality and involves grasslands beauty. It remains a means used to strengthen artistic appeal.

Mr. Duan said that in the different schools of Seychelles that he visited, the students are very interested in paper-cutting, and they apply themselves very seriously. He said that he could see much from their creation that says that the Seychelles are a fine example of a pure and mystical environment for the next generations. He added, at this stage, paper-cutting would be another art form that can promote the natural side of Seychelles as this remains an asset for the country.

Minister St.Ange and Mr. Duan discussed the opportunities for Seychellois students and art teachers to develop their creativity through the paper-cutting art form. Taking into account the growing and excellent cultural relations between China and Seychelles, they have agreed very soon to launch a paper cutting competition for schools and organizations where all received art works will be display in an exhibition during the first Seychelles – China Day Celebrations programmed to be launched on January 31, 2014. It is being proposed that the first three winners will be rewarded by a short-term workshop in the Mr. Duan’s Center in China itself.

Minister St.Ange thanked Mr. Duan for his support for the Ministry of Culture of Seychelles and he expressed his deep appreciation for the personal input by Mr. Duan in sharing his expertise and passion.

Mr. Duan will fly to Mauritius in Wednesday, July 7.
