Jenny Kearney, the Seychelles former Tourism Representative in South

Jenny Kearney, the Seychelles former Tourism Representative in South ( Derek Savy, in his column in the Today Newspaper of Seychelles, remembers
Jenny Kearney of South Africa who represented the Seychelles in that important tourism market for many years.

Derek Savy writes: “It is with profound sorrow that I learned about the passing away of Jenny Kearney on Sunday, July 21, in South Africa. She celebrated her 58th birthday the previous weekend and sadly departed after a short illness.

“Jenny has had a long relationship with Seychelles since she was contracted to represent our country, heading the Seychelles Tourism Office in
Johannesburg at the turn of the new millennium from 1999 to 2005.”

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Seychelles Tourism Board paid tribute upon hearing of her passing: “Jenny was a mover and a dedicated personality for the Seychelles tourism industry. With her bubbly personality, she helped during her time at the STMA (Seychelles Tourism Marketing Agency) to position Seychelles as a destination of choice in South Africa," said Minister Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture.

“Jenny was a tireless tourism professional who commanded a wealthy portfolio of contacts that helped open doors and position Seychelles in the forefront. Her outgoing personality, jovial character, and magnetism turned her into the “queen” of the tourism social circuit. I always enjoyed her company and her sense of humor. In fact, I admired her easy take on life. She took everything in stride with no fuss at all. To Jenny, nothing was a problem, and there was always a solution to everything,” Minister St.Ange concluded.

Jenny had a flair for public relations, and maintaining close relationships with key tourism industry players and press heavy weights. She can no doubt be credited as being instrumental in firmly establishing Seychelles on the South African tourism map during her tenure as the country’s tourism bureau head.

Jenny Kearney had more than 30 years’ experience in various travel-related services including airline incorporation, hotels, cruise lines, tourist offices, wholesale packaging and incentives. She was also an active member of several travel-related organizations, such as ANTOR (held the position of President), SKAL (past President), and Travelbags (past President). Jenny has visited at least 38 countries, some on numerous occasions, and is surely one of South Africa’s undisputed tourism personalities. She headed Jenuwen Travel Promotions, which she set up in February 1996 to offer professional representation, sales, and marketing to the travel trade.

Jenny is credited with several major campaigns and marketing actions that significantly raised the profile of the Seychelles destination in South
Africa. Glynn Burridge, a work colleague during her stint with STMA recalls: “Jenny brought a wealth of experience in the tourism industry to the table and, as Seychelles’ tourism representative in South Africa, did a great deal to bridge the knowledge gap about Seychelles on the African continent.

“Her affable, jovial manner belied an innate sense of professionalism, drawing people to her and so to the destination she represented for many years. She was a true friend of Seychelles and someone who had the country and the interests of its tourism industry at heart. She is fondly remembered and will be sorely missed.”
