Travelling the Kontrei, with Kontrei Traveller

Travelling the Kontrei, with Kontrei Traveller ( South African travel company, Kontrei Traveller, is offering the equivalent of Slow Food for travellers with the goal of providing a genuine ‘sense of place experience’ of South Africa to visitors. Kontrei Traveller matches travellers with local hosts who help visitors understand the country’s distinctive regions through its people, food and products, thereby ensuring an authentic experience for visitors but also a responsible one.

As more visitors return to South Africa on a regular basis, Kontrei Traveller is offering a portfolio of holidays to help visitors to find the authentic South Africa using Cape Town as gateway. The maximum pax is 16, the pace is slow, searching for enlightenment when guided an hosted by real South Africans.

Kontrei Traveller was established in 1985 by Niël du Toit, based in Paarl, a short distance from Cape Town in South Africa. From the outset, the company’s philosophy was to provide an experience for visitors that linked visitors with the locale in which they were travelling.

Niël du Toit commented: “South Africa is such a rich and varied destination for any traveller to explore. With eleven official languages spoken within the country, the cultural differences are as varied as the landscape. So often people only scratch the surface during their visit. We say to our visitors ‘look at South Africa and let the land speak, and then the incredible diversity and richness of our country will fill you.’”

“Many of our guests are saying no to the traditional mass tourism holidays and are looking for something different. The Kontrei Traveller Portfolio of accommodation and tours is carefully chosen so that visitors can be assured that our partners are committed to both conservation and the local community. In our experience, companies that are rooted in the community often provide the most genuine and memorable South African experiences.”

The company takes its name from the Afrikaans word ‘kontrei’ meaning region, of which there are 37 in South Africa. Each kontrei is not defined by an administrative boundary but by its own distinct and unique natural and cultural integrity and each has its own indicative produce and food. Examples include The Fairest Cape, Boland, Overberg, Namaqualand, Klein Karoo, Koup, Camdeboo, Settler Country, Transkei, Green Midlands, Lowveld and Bushveld.

Kontrei Traveller aims to match visitors looking for a genuine experience with the right guides, accommodation and activity providers in each region to ensure that the visitor experiences the true richness of the area. Using Kontrei Traveller’s Portfolio, visitors have the freedom to build their own itinerary but by using the advice and knowledge of Kontrei Traveller they can ensure that a kontrei’s true ‘sense of place’ is experienced.

Kontrei Traveller arranges all elements of a holiday in South Africa on an individual or group basis as well as fixed and tailor-made itineraries. The focus is on guided tours enabling visitors to meet local people and learn about the regions throughout which they’re travelling. Tours range from safaris, ecotourism, wildlife watching and hiking to honeymoons, weddings, working farm holidays, local community living and star-gazing - the full cultural experience.

If you want to see the whole of South Africa in a week then Kontrei Traveller may not be for you, however their philosophy of taking your time on holiday in order to appreciate the sense of place means that for many visitors to South Africa, using Cape Town as gateway, who are looking for the real country, Kontrei Traveller provides the perfect solution.

Kontrei Traveller currently represents 25 accommodation and tour providers across South Africa. The company’s aim is to market a sustainable tourism product which is managed in a sustainable way and is transparent to the sustainable consumer.
