Airtel Seychelles launches Airtel Rising Stars in partnership with Manchester United ( Friday, July 5, 2013, Airtel Seychelles launched its first local chapter of Airtel Rising Stars. This is in partnership with Manchester United, the Seychelles Football Federation, and Samsung Electronics that is the official device partner for the ARS program.

This initiative was started as an annual, multi-country grassroots soccer initiative that offers young stars the opportunity to play, compete, and showcase their talent in their respective countries. Airtel Rising Stars is the largest under 17 grassroots tournament on the African continent. Although this is the first edition in Seychelles Airtel Rising Stars, it is in its third season and is running across the following African countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Madagascar, Malawi, Zambia, DRC, Congo B, Gabon, Chad, Niger, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Rwanda.

“Airtel is already a great supporter of youth soccer in Seychelles as seen in the Airtel Cup, and together with our partners we will ensure we are not only great supporters, but also the most consistent supporter of grassroots football in Seychelles. Airtel Rising Stars is important to us because it enables the youth to experience fun and enjoyment while connecting the community with their passion that is football. We are proud to launch Airtel Rising Stars and look forward to nurturing the next greatest football star out there in Seychelles,” said AirtelSeychelles’ Country Manager Mr. Vikram Sinha during the launch.

The inaugural Airtel Rising Stars in Seychelles will offer an opportunity to 2 most talented youths who are spotted in Seychelles to attend a top notch soccer clinic in the Democratic Republic of Congo this September run by Manchester United Football Club. Manchester United will have their coaches teach the young selected stars across Africa to play the Manchester United way. The young stars will be taught some world-class skills they can practice after the clinic that will help them in their road towards becoming Africa’s next top footballer.

Mr. Sinha also announced that in line with Airtel’s brand promise to enrich the lives, Airtel will soon be launching a CSR initiative, “Goals for Education.” This program looks into Airtel giving back something to schools associated with the youth taking part in the Airtel Rising Stars.

The Seychelles Football Federation will locally run Airtel Rising Stars, and it hopes to see many boys under 17 come out and showcase their skills during this tournament.

“Placing value in our youngsters will benefit the community at large. The SFF has placed a high priority in youth development and will continue to do so for years to come. Airtel Rising stars is a unique and exciting new development in the football calendar,” said the Chairman of the SFF, Mr. Elvis Chetty. “Giving our youngsters an opportunity to expose themselves is a critical component of development. This program is the culmination of a decade-long relationship between Airtel and the SFF. The SFF would like to thank Airtel for its continued faith in our partnership."

Raja Ramani representing Cellular Services Ltd., the Samsung Channel Partner in Seychelles, said, “Airtel Raising Stars is a definitive initiative by Airtel to extract the talents of our aspiring youngsters and help in realizing their dreams. Football super stars are fast becoming another Natural Resource of Africa. On behalf of Samsung we are proud to be the lead partner with Airtel.

The guests of honor at the ceremony were the Designated Minister&Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports, Mr. Vincent Meriton, and the Minister of Education, Mrs. MacSuzy Mondon.

In a short speech, Minister Meriton who is also Chairman for the Social Renaissance Committee, thanked Airtel for its continued support to the youth and development of football in Seychelles. He said: “In our own small country, the scale of the drug problem has reached alarming levels. We have to admit that the statistics are shocking; the effects on our youths and families, disturbing, but amidst the despair, there is reason to hope. Sport remains one of the last bastions for our youth, because it inspires, it teaches the virtue of hard work and discipline, and brings people together. That is why I am pleased that one of the leading businesses in Seychelles has chosen football as a vehicle not only to achieve its business goals but to also contribute to the promotion of sports and a healthy lifestyle as well as to the social cohesion of our society.”

Also present at the ceremony were the Principal Secretary for Sports, Mr. Denis Rose; the National Sports Council CEO, Ms. Giovanna Rousseau; members of the SFF Executive committee; and Airtel staff; as well as a group of young football players.
