The Chinese art of Qigong reaches the shores of Seychelles

The Chinese art of Qigong reaches the shores of Seychelles ( Zhang Jianyong, a Kung Fu teacher from China, is in Seychelles to propel the art of Qigong to Seychelles’ senior citizens. Qigong, a revolutionary technique based on healing practice, is being introduced for the first time in Seychelles by Zhang Jianyong, who on countless occasions, has come to Seychelles as part of a bilateral cooperation between Seychelles and China.

Touching down on the Seychelles shore on July 2, Zhang Jianyong, accompanied by Liang Dong Sheng, called on Marcel Rosalie, the Director General for Culture, who was currently replacing Benjamine Rose, Principal Secretary for Culture, who is on an overseas mission.

“Your presence in Seychelles falls within the Ministry of Tourism and Culture’s plan of action drafted in 2010 with the aim of opening up avenues of exchanges between the Ministry and China. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture recently welcomed a delegation from Inner Mongolia and together signed a Memorandum of Understanding between both parties.

“We value the relationship we have with China, and we look forward for more fruitful exchanges,” said Mr. Rosalie at the meeting.

Miera Savy, the Department of Culture's Director of International Cooperation, was responsible for organizing the week's program for Zhang Jianyong and Liang Dong Sheng.

Zhang Jianyong said that this year, emphasis will be put on Qigong. “In 2011 and 2012, we introduced wushu, a full contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts to the Seychellois public. This year we are introducing Qiyong which touches on healing practices,” Zhang Jianyong said.

Zhang Jianyong and Liang Dong Sheng started their first class on July 2 with senior citizens in the Ballroom Hall of National Cultural Centre. The session attracted a high turnout. Their classes will also target patients at the Wellness and Spa Centre at Les Canelles as well as dancers, sport persons, and educators.
