Louis D'Offay, the Seychelles known and respected hotelier, steps down as tourism industry’s Chairman after 15 years of service to the industry

Louis D'Offay, the Seychelles known and respected hotelier, steps down as tourism industry’s Chairman after 15 years of service to the industry (Forimmediaterelease.net) One of the highlights of the annual general meeting of the Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association (SHTA) last Friday was the stepping down of Louis D’Offay as Chairman of the association. Mr. D’Offay has served the association for 15 years.

Mr. D'Offay, who said there is a need for new blood in the Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association to face up to new challenges, is being replaced by Vice-Chairperson Daniella Payet-Alis, until new elections to elect the SHTA management board are held in 8 months’ time.

Addressing the well-attended meeting at the International Conference Centre (ICCS) on Friday, Mr. D'Offay said there is a need to enhance the consultative process between government and the tourism industry. He noted that this was important to tackle important issues such as taxes, Gainful Employment Permits (GOP), airlines, and security concerns.

Mr. D'Offay said operating costs have recently escalated, and Seychelles is becoming more and more difficult to market. He reiterated a call for the post of Marketing Manager of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) - vacant since three years - to be filled without further delay.

He commended the fact that the Tourism Board offices abroad are staffed by Seychellois personnel with local knowledge, a factor which has yielded positive results to marketing efforts.

Mr. D'Offay, however, said the withdrawal of Air Austral on the La Reunion route is bound to affect the smaller Seychellois-owned establishments. The withdrawal of Air Austral means that visitors from La Reunion have to fly to Mauritius to get to Seychelles and this means purchasing two air tickets, costing a total 960 euros, doubled the previous cost.

He added that the withdrawal of Qatar Airways in September is also not encouraging.

The Industry Association’s AGM was attended by Ministers Joel Morgan (Internal Affairs&Transport) and Alain St.Ange (Tourism&Culture).
