We Beat St. James Live – a cultural extravaganza

We Beat St. James Live – a cultural extravaganza ( From June 7 to 16, 2013, the bustling community of St. James in Western Trinidad will be celebrating the “We Beat” festival. The festival, which is in its thirteenth year, promises to be a memorable one with cultural displays including a street steel pan parade, historical lectures, and calypso concerts.

Supported by Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Tourism, the We Beat festival was developed to promote the community of St. James which, due to its all-day, all-night activities that never leaves visitors without excitement, is dubbed as the “city that never sleeps.” The festival provides a platform to showcase the talents of local artists while highlighting the contribution of persons that have been pivotal in the development of St. James and by extension the wider community.

The festival kicks off on Friday, June 7, with an Award Ceremony where two icons will be honored, namely, Dr. Michael Alleyne in the field of education and Mr. Mannie Dookie (posthumously) in the field of sports. Thereafter, on Sunday, June 9, there will be a treat for children entitled “We Treat” at 5:00 pm, and at 10:00 pm on the same day will be the always popular Health Day which is held in conjunction with the Port of Spain Lions Club & North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA).

On Thursday, June 13, there will be an explosion of pan with Pan Explosion Steelbands in Concert which will feature the sweet sounds of Republic Bank Exodus, Solo Harmonites and St. James Tripolians at the St. James Amphitheatre. On June 14, old time calypso will be on the forefront with performances by Baron, Stalin, Scrunter, and Explainer, plus many others.

The We Beat week ends with We Film Night and also a Carnival in June where revelers can don their Carnival costumes and take a jump in the Steelband Parade along Western Main Road from 7:00 pm to the wee hours of the morning at 2:00 am.

This year’s We Beat St. James promises to be one of the most highly-anticipated events on the Trinidad & Tobago event calendar and is one of the best showcases of culture. Each year, the festival grows in popularity and stature and it is no doubt that visitors can eagerly look forward to We Beat 2014. So book now and don’t miss it!
