Snow falls in Piton des Neiges on Reunion Island

Snow falls in Piton des Neiges on Reunion Island ( This morning, the head of the shelter of the Cave Dufour on Reunion Island woke up in a beautiful setting. It snowed at the top of Piton des Neiges, which means snow mountain, something that has not happened for six years.

The Piton des Neiges, a dormant volcano, dominates Reunion Island from a height of 3,070 meters above sea level. At the origin of the creation of the island, it is also the highest peak in the Indian Ocean. Its last eruption dates back 12,000 years.

This Tuesday, June 4, the Piton des Neiges donned a white veil. Indeed, a few flakes of snow fell on the summit of Piton des Neiges, a phenomenon that remains outstanding, even in this period of austral winter.

With these flakes that cover the roof of Reunion Island, Piton des Neiges was never so aptly named!
