Seychelles Chamber of Commerce & Industries calls on Ministry of Tourism & Culture to join forces to find ways to encourage equitable distribution of wealth and benefits in the tourism industry

Seychelles Chamber of Commerce & Industries calls on Ministry of Tourism & Culture to join forces to find ways to encourage equitable distribution of wealth and benefits in the tourism industry (Forimmediaterelease.net) “The Seychelles Chamber of Commerce&Industries (SCCI) will give its support towards policies that encourages ownership of development by our people.” This supportive statement was made by the Chairman of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Marco Francis, in a recent meeting held with the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Alain St.Ange. His statement was in response to Minister St Ange’s request for the private sector to be more engaging in the industry and to take ownership of it.

The meeting between the Chairman of SCCI and the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture took place at the offices of the Ministry of Tourism&Culture at the National Cultural Center in Victoria earlier this week in the presence of the Principal Secretary for Tourism, Ms. Sherin Naiken; Principal Secretary for Culture, Ms. Benjamine Rose; and the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Mrs. Elsia Grandcourt. Mr. Francis was accompanied for the visit by Jerry Morin, a member of the SCCI Executive Committee.

Discussions between the SCCI and Minister St.Ange centered on the need to make the private sector more engaging towards promoting the destination and how to assist smaller entrepreneurs in the industry to obtain more visibility so as to reap the maximum benefit.

Mr. Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, made an appeal to the SCCI and the business community to seize every available opportunity to positively portray Seychelles to the world. He expressed “the challenges of the tourism industry are not only for the tourism operators but for the whole country, as every individual stands to benefit in one way or another when the industry grows.”

On his part, Mr. Francis shared that “Given that tourism continues to remain the Seychelles’ main sector of the economy, there is the pressing need for our local entrepreneurs to participate and share in the wealth.”

The importance of working closely with the private sector, especially on regulatory and policy aspects, was also a key part of the discussion. Minister St.Ange said that this first meeting is the beginning of a series of meetings between the Ministry and the SCCI and that the points raised would be further touched upon in subsequent meetings to follow.
