Seychelles President meets with new IOTC Chief

Seychelles President meets with new IOTC Chief ( The Seychelles President, Mr. James Michel, met with the new Executive Secretary of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), Mr. Rondoph Payet, at State House this morning. Mr. Payet was accompanied by the outgoing Executive Secretary, Alejandro Anganuzzi.

President Michel commended Mr. Payet for his election to the post last year, noting that Seychelles' expertise and leadership in the regional fisheries organization had been recognized with his election.

The President and the Executive Secretary discussed the projects of the IOTC including work towards regional compliance of fisheries management measures, future mechanisms for fisheries stock allocation, research, as well as the status of tuna stocks.

Mr. Rondolph Payet was previously the Regional Executive Secretary for the World Bank-funded South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project. Prior to this post he served for seven years as the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Fishing Authority. In 2009, he received the “Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Merite Agricole” (Knighthood of the National Order of Agricultural Merit) from the government of France for “distinguished achievement in fisheries.” Mr. Payet has a BSc in Fisheries Science and Oceanography, a Masters degree in Marine and Coastal Resource Management, earned with Distinction, a Postgraduate Diploma in GIS and Fisheries Management, and a Masters in Business Administration. Mr. Payet formerly served as Chairman of Indian Ocean Tuna Commission.

Mr. Payet was elected Executive Secretary by the the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission during the 16th Session of the IOTC held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 in Freemantle, Australia. This month he commences his first three-year term in office.
