Car rental rates highest in NYC, lowest in Milwaukee

Car rental rates highest in NYC, lowest in Milwaukee ( Given its reputation as the most populous and the second most-congested city in the United States, it is perhaps not surprising that New York City has topped a new survey as the most expensive U.S. destination to rent a car. Conducted by [ ], the survey compared 50 American destinations with respect to the average amount renters had to spend for the cheapest available car over the past 12 months.

When the polling was complete, New York City ranked as the clear frontrunner, with an average daily rental rate of US$72. New Orleans and Honolulu came in second and third most expensive, respectively, with average rates of US$64 and US$63 per day.

It bears mentioning that these figures are average rates. In reality, the amount renters have actually had to pay over the last year may have been significantly higher or lower. As Michelle Walters from points out: “Rental rates for certain destinations vary heavily depending on the season. For instance, Honolulu is the most expensive destination in the winter, New Orleans tops the list in the spring, and Alaska’s Anchorage snags the number one spot during the summer months. New York, however, is always quite expensive, making it, on average, the most expensive city overall in which to rent a car.”

On the other end of the spectrum, Milwaukee is the cheapest U.S. car rental destination according to the survey. There, renters typically had to pay an average of only US$27 per day for the most affordable vehicle. Also very affordable are the West Coast’s San Diego, Seattle, and Los Angeles, all coming in at around US$30 per day.

The following table shows the 10 most expensive car rental destinations in the United States. The prices shown reflect the average daily rate for the cheapest available car in each city over the past 12 months.
