Seychelles has officially launched Fete de la Francophonie 2013 ( In his speech to officially launch the Fete de la Francophonie event, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, said that the international day of “La Francophonie,” celebrated annually in Seychelles, is an “intense and significant occasion and a true moment of fraternity with the French-speaking countries of the five continents.” Seychelles has the French language as one of its three official languages. English and Creole are the two other official languages of the islands.

Minister St.Ange, who is also the Vice President of the National Committee of La Francophonie, has outlined Seychelles’ accomplishments of 2013 in the promotion of the French language. The visit of the General Manager of the International Organization of La Francophonie and the inauguration of Seychelles first “Espace du Livre Francophonie,” a French section in the children’s national library, highlighted Seychelles vision of putting to the fore, French as a language.

“2013 is also a year where we should mobilize to support our sportsmen and sportswomen and artists selected for the upcoming ‘Jeux de la Francophonie’ to be held in September in Nice. I am also honored on behalf of the National Committee of Francophonie to launch 2 school competitions for 2013. The theme of the competition is “Discovering our Community,” or in French, “A la decouverte de notre communaute.” Artwork highlighting this theme will be featured in an exhibition. Similarly, a quiz competition, QUIZZ ICOMOS, aimed at testing the pupils’ knowledge on historical events of ICOMOS are being published each day in Seychelles Nation,” the Minister added.

The French Ambassador to Seychelles, Mme. Genevieve Iancu, has spoken about the importance of French and the Francophone world. She said that Seychelles had made landmark progress in the promotion of French as an academic language. Ambassador Iancu said that Seychelles should take another step forward by introducing French as a teaching language for its academic subjects.

The launching of “Fete de la Francophonie 2013”at the International Conference Centre was held in the presence of the Seychelles Vice President, Mr. Danny Faure; the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean Paul Adam, who is also Chairman of Francophonie; government ministers; members of the judiciary; dignitaries; and members of National Assembly.

The highlight of the event was the prize-giving ceremony of the song competition “Grand Prix de la Chanson Francaise.” Veteran singer, David Andre, won the first prize followed by Mosianne Dugasse in the second position, duo Sherille Clarisse and Terrence Gomme won the third position, and Serge Low Hong and the group Metisse took the fifth position.

The “Fete de la Francophonie 2013” ended on Saturday, March 23.
