Shopska, Sarmi & Tikvenik – Villa Gella provides an insight into Bulgaria’s gastronomic culture

Shopska, Sarmi & Tikvenik – Villa Gella provides an insight into Bulgaria’s gastronomic culture ( For a lot of Germans Bulgaria’s cuisine constitutes unfamiliar territory. Maybe a visit to Villa Gella helps to discover and to fall in love with the country’s treats. The private villa with six rooms is enthroned at 1,770 meters height in the middle of the Rhodope Mountains, the reputed birth place of legendary Orpheus, a singer and poet from Greek mythology. Guests of the hideaway await a traditionally Mediterranean gastronomic culture which is enriched by Ottoman and Asian finesses. Apart from the herb garden onsite, a multitude of local farms take care of a high-quality food supply. The hotel’s in-house production produces bread, butter, yogurt, and cheese. Bulgarian recipes are mostly presented by means of three- to four-course menus. As starters, often seasonal salads such as the traditional Shopska salad, which consists of cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and feta cheese, are served. Other appetizers such as a traditional dish named “sarmi,” which are vine leaves stuffed with rice, nuts,or meat, make guests long for more. Visitors should also not miss the avocado salad, based on a secret recipe. Grilled vegetables, steamed trout, wine-kebab and Bulgarian moussaka, fish or meat dishes prepared on hot stone, poached eggs in yogurt with parsley, pastries,as well as vegetables scalloped with cheese make the main course an indulgence at its best. Sweet yogurt with wild berries, a Bulgarian pumpkin strudel named “tikvenik” or baklava represent the grand finale. The rent for Villa Gella is around 9,200 eros for twelve persons per week. Further information for the villa can be found at or via telephone +359 888 566 872.

At the heart of the house, the living and dining room offers a place to enjoy cooking by the villa’s private chef; afternoon tea brewed from local medicinal herbs; or get-togethers with local musicians, historians, and archeologists.
