Harnessing blue and green economies key to fighting climate change: Seychelles engages with partners following damages of heavy rainfall (Forimmediaterelease.net) Vice President Danny Faure has engaged the African Union to take up the mobilization of the blue and green economies as part of efforts on the continent to address climate change.

Speaking on the report of the Africa Group on climate change in the context of the recent Doha Conference on climate change, Vice President Faure called for a “blue and green” revolution to mobilize resources to better support African economies:

“Following Rio + 20 and the Durban platform we cannot talk about African renaissance without also addressing the urgent need to scale up Africa’s Green economy. Africa has also the largest potential in terms of energy - generation from renewable sources which still remains fully untapped.

“But Africa also needs a blue economy. It is our common responsibility to effectively address the many problems impacting upon the health and productivity of our oceans such as global warming, coral bleaching, ocean acidification, pollution, overfishing, and piracy."

During the course of the Summit the Vice President, along with the Seychelles delegation comprisedof the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam, and Seychelles Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ambassador Joseph Nourrice, will also be engaging partners in the margins of the AU Summit to brief them on the large scale of damages caused by heavy rains in Seychelles over the weekend and potential support and technical assistance that may be available.

Heavy rains have affected several countries of the region including Mozambique.
