Seychelles National Conservatoire of Performing Arts stage their end-of-year performance

Seychelles National Conservatoire of Performing Arts stage their end-of-year performance ( To mark the end of this calendar year, two schools of the National Conservatoire of Performing Arts got together in the evening of Friday, December 14, in the presence of Mr. Alain St Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, to showcase a number of dance and music pieces.

A substantial number of parents, students, and sponsors were at the International Conference Centre of Seychelles in Victoria to witness to incredible talents of the very young dance and music students. Each school had approximately forty-five minutes to summarize their achievements of the year, so it was not surprising to see shortened repertoires of Bach played on the piano or re-arranged choreographies of Rihanna merging into hip-hop moves from the music of Chris Brown.

These classical, modern, and improvised pieces also illustrated for the first time, how it is possible to have students of music and dance joining forces to put forth the Sega and traditional music of Seychelles, without losing track of what has shaped the western and eastern norms in the music and dance cultures throughout the world.

While the dance students moved back stage and made way for the school jazz ensemble, led by the Head of the Music Program, Mr. Jerry Souris, himself a dedicated trombone player, this opportunity was given to award certificates to music students. They had taken and been awarded an International Certificate in Music issued by ABRSM, the UK-based Examination Board in grades 1 right up to grade 5. Forty names were called out as is required of the NCPA award-giving ceremony, and those present had their certificates handed over by the Director of the Conservatoire, Mr. Pierre Joseph. It is important to note that students take theory and practical examinations of music once a year, and this time, as has been the case with other groups, the results of both were really impressive.

The last dance piece to close the end-of-year show, choreographed by Mrs. Daniella Rose, the Head of Program for Dance, brought over forty participants onto the stage, jumping and clapping to entice the audience. Then all participants sat on stage and waited patiently for the announcement of winners in each category. The winning prize and trophy for eight to ten-year-olds (8-10) went to Hannah Roucou, eleven to fourteen (11-14) to Beverly Moncherry, fifteen and above (15+) to Trisha Solomon, and finally the overall performance winner, Sophie Lagrenade, was handed her trophy by the Minister for Tourism and Culture.

Mr. Pierre Joseph, the Director of the Seychelles National Conservatoire of Performing Arts, on behalf of the Department of Culture, the parents, teachers of music and dance, the sponsors and friends of the National Conservatoire of Performing Arts, and the Office of the Minister for Tourism and Culture, congratulated everyone for their hard work and dedication.

Minister Alain St.Ange was given the honor of addressing the show and to launch it. He thanked all the parents for their understanding of the work of the schools of Performing Arts, and he thanked them and the sponsors for their support. Minister St.Ange also congratulated the students who were courageous and able to be part of the show in front of the large audience at the ICCS Conference Center.
