Seychelles National Library commemorates Library Day and launches new services

Seychelles National Library commemorates Library Day and launches new services ( The Seychelles National Library has launched the National Library Services Unit housing the SESELWANA Collection and also opened its doors to the public during its Open Day in commemoration of the National Library Day which falls on December 15.

The SESELWANA Collection, launched by the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture Mr. Alain St.Ange, is a national collection of publications on Seychelles which was, until its transfer to the Library Services Unit, housed at the Seychelles National Archives. The decision to transfer the documents came in 2010 when the National Library, through the National Library Act of June 2010, was mandated to be the legal deposit center for all documents published in Seychelles, about Seychelles, and by Seychellois.

“The launch of the Unit,” declared Minister St.Ange, “is another milestone in the development of the Seychelles National Library and the name given to the collection ‘SESELWANA’ clearly depicts our national identity.”

The poetry collection, “Poenm Kreol,” consisting of 19 poems written by Seychellois poets and to be included in the National Collection was also launched at the same time. The Seychelles National Archives, the Seychelles National Heritage Section, as well as all poets whose work feature in the collection were handed a copy of the book by the Principal Secretary for the Culture Department Ms. Benjamine Rose.

As is customary every year, the National Library awards members of staff celebrating ten years service with the section. This year only one person, Mrs. Caroline Pierre, fell into this category. Certificates were also awarded to six staff who has served twenty years with the National Library, namely Mrs. Christianne Adeline, Mrs. Marie-Cecile Radegonde, Ms. Pamela Denousse, Mrs. Lita Elizabeth, Mrs. Verene Morel, and Ms. Maddy Victor.

They were presented with their awards by the Director General for Culture, Mr. Marcel Rosalie.

After the presentations, the crowd was guided to the Library Services Unit to view the SESELWANA Collection and the repository after which they viewed an exhibition entitled “A Day in the Life of a Librarian.”

The National Library remained open to the public for the entire day in the context of its Open Day.
