Seychelles Festival of the Sea, SUBIOS 2012 launched open by Minister St.Ange ( The Seychelles islands have once again celebrated their beautiful marine world with the 2012 SUBIOS, Seychelles Festival of the Sea, that was officially launched on Friday, November 23, by the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, in the presence of Minister for Education, Macsuzy Mondon, and the Minister for Natural Resources and Industry, Peter Sinon.

SUBIOS, the Seychelles Festival of the Sea, which is organized annually by the Seychelles Tourism Board alongside other partners as a three day-event, was this year taking place under the theme “People and the Ocean – Striving for a Sustainable Partnership.” The festival took place between November 23 and 25 at the popular golden mile of Seychelles, the Beau Vallon area.

Minister St.Ange launched this year’s edition in an opening ceremony at the Beau Vallon, where all the activities of the three-day festivities are taking place. The Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Elsia Grandcourt, took to the podium before the Minister to explain why the Tourism Board organizes this annual event..

Also present for the opening of the event, which the Seychelles islands uses to celebrate its beautiful turquoise sea, rich in marine life, as well as to educate its people and visitors of the importance to protect and conserve its marine ecosystems, were the Minister of Education, Macsuzy Mondon; Minister for Natural Resources and Industry, Peter Sinon; the Principal Secretary of Culture, Benjamine Rose; the Special Adviser to the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Raymonde Onezime; and Alain De Commarmond, the Director General Climate Affairs, Adaptation and Information at the Ministry of Environment, as well as the crowd who had gathered at Beau Vallon for the first day of the event.

Speaking at the opening ceremony the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Elsia Grandcourt welcomed all those present for this year’s edition of the festival, and reminded everyone of its significance.

SUBIOS, the Seychelles Festival of the Sea is an “important event that celebrates the seas that surround us and the beautiful but fragile marine world, which we must constantly be reminded we must take great pains to respect and conserve ,because it’s our lifeline to the future and the future of our children,” remarked Mrs. Elsia Grandcourt.

“Today our seas are coming under pressure because of global warming and the planet’s increasing populations, and this is why our Festival of the Sea, SUBIOS, has played, and continues to play, such an important role in educating us about our oceans and marine ecosystems, and is an invaluable platform for educating our youngsters about their marine heritage,” she said.

“The water worlds of Seychelles are important elements in our tourism industry as they offer added diversity to the visitor’s experience of our islands in the form niche activities,” Mrs. Elsia Grandcourt reminded the crowd just before inviting Minister St.Ange to officially announce the 2012 SUBIOS, the Seychelles Festival of the Sea, opened.

Minister St.Ange also took this opportunity to reiterate the importance of protecting and of conserving Seychelles’ sea life, saying that the festival is “an apt time for us to reflect on the changing world we live in. It is time for us to reflect on those challenges we continue to face and commit ourselves, both individually and as nation. It is time for us all to reflect on changes we need to make, and for us to adapt to the ways we must, in order to live in greater harmony with the forces of nature,” Minister Alain St.Ange said.

The Minister also explained that special attention has been given to the children and youngsters for this year’s, SUBIOS, the Seychelles Festival of Sea, so as to create awareness among the young people and to invite them to appreciate the underwater world of the Seychelles islands.

After officially declaring the event open, the gathered crowd enjoyed a special Cabaret Show by the local music band “Zez.” Those present also had the opportunity to view the screening of the SUBIOS, Seychelles Festival of the Sea, video.

After the opening ceremony, the event continued with the planned activities until well through the night, and continued the following day with the Children’s Fun Day.
