Message to President Obama from Seychelles founding President

Message to President Obama from Seychelles founding President ( “Your Excellency: From Kigali, capital of the Republic of Rwanda, where I am now leading a mediation mission as a member of the committee of the Wise and the Elders of COMESA (Common Market of East and Central Africa) following three days of discussions with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo concerning the M23 problems, I would like to extend to you my warmest and heartfelt congratulations on your re-election as President of the United States of America.

“Your Excellency, that my delegation and myself were able to follow the events concerning your re-election live through CNN, here in the heart of Africa, is indeed a testimony of the fact that we are living in a global village. In this context, Your Excellency, as President of the super power which the USA certainly is, you are today in a position second to none to determine and influence the nature of our future world.

“May I avail of this opportunity to express the hope that Your Excellency will continue to concern himself with the problems of beloved Africa - the need to participate in its economic progress, the need to eradicate poverty and illiteracy as well as to continue the fight against HIV.

“Insofar as my own country, the Republic of Seychelles is concerned, I am aware of the ties of friendship, goodwill, and understanding which prevail at these times. Permit me, Your Excellency, to express the wish that the present situation soon finds its consolidation by your government designating an Ambassador that would take residence in Port Victoria as ambassadors representing other nations have done. There is certainly no justification for Seychelles to be a blank spot on the diplomatic globe of a USA under the wise and visionary leadership of President Barack Obama.

“In conclusion, I also hope that Your Excellency will find the time in the not-too-distant future to bring the First Lady and family to Seychelles for a well-deserved holiday. In this respect, I am sure that my sentiments are fully shared by President Michel, his government, as well as all the people of Seychelles.

With friendly thoughts and highest consideration,
Sir James R. Mancham KBE
Founding President of the Republic of Seychelles
Member of the Committee of the Elders and the Wise of COMESA
