Codesharing between Lufthansa and EgyptAir to begin on 28 October

( Improved travel opportunities for passengers flying to Egypt.
Lufthansa and EgyptAir will begin cooperating at the start of the winter timetable on 28 October, only four-and-a-half months after the two airlines signed a codesharing agreement.

In future, all the flights offered by both carriers between Germany and Egypt will be operated with two flight numbers. Codesharing will apply on all routes from Frankfurt and Munich to Cairo as well as on flights from Frankfurt to Alexandria. Further codesharing services to tourist centres in Egypt and North Africa will be introduced shortly. EgyptAir also plans to transfer its flight numbers to various Lufthansa flights within Germany and Europe and on certain routes to North America.

Passengers of both airlines will benefit from the codesharing arrangement, as harmonised timetables will improve connections between Germany and Egypt. In addition, members of the two carriers’ frequent flyer programmes will be able to collect miles on all Lufthansa and EgyptAir routes and redeem them on either airline.

“EgyptAir is an ideal partner for us because the cooperation arrangement will enable us to position ourselves long term in an important, dynamic growth market in North Africa. We are thus further expanding our global route network for our customers," Lufthansa CEO and Chairman Wolfgang Mayrhuber said at the signing of the agreement in June of this year.

“Our collaboration with Lufthansa represents a strategic alliance which will enhance our position in the European market. It is part of our corporate strategy of forging partnerships with leading airlines in our target markets. The codesharing agreement between EgyptAir and Lufthansa will certainly enhance our product," EgyptAir Chairman Abd El Hamid said in June, hailing Lufthansa as a trailblazing partner with an extensive service offering in the German market.

Egypt is one of the most important markets in Africa for Lufthansa, whose ties with the country go back a long way. As early as 1959, Lufthansa launched a twice-weekly Boeing 727 service to Cairo from Frankfurt via Munich. Today, the German flag carrier offers 17 flights a week between Germany and Egypt, operating 14 services to Cairo and three to Alexandria from Frankfurt. Lufthansa is thus the leading European carrier in Egypt. But EgyptAir, which currently offers 18 flights a week from Egypt to Germany, will also benefit from the forthcoming cooperation.

EgyptAir, the leading carrier in the Middle East and Africa, was founded in May 1923 and this year celebrated its 75th anniversary. The well-established airline currently flies to 72 destinations in 47 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America including all egyptian airports. From Cairo EgyptAir is operating more than 550 flights per week.

In mid-October, EgyptAir was nominated for inclusion in Star Alliance. Once the integration process is complete, the Egyptian carrier is set to become a full member of the airline grouping within the next 18 months.
