Tourism and culture opens door for a Russian couple to exchange vows at a Seychelles traditional wedding during Festival Kreol 2012

Tourism and culture opens door for a Russian couple to exchange vows at a Seychelles traditional wedding during Festival Kreol 2012 ( The Seychelles Creole Festival committee, in collaboration with the Beau Vallon District Administration and the Seychelles Tourism Board, organized a “Tifin” wedding, which is the Seychelles traditional wedding, as part of the activities for the 27th edition of the 2012 Creole Festival. The organizing committee created a successful revival of the traditional Seychelles’ “Tifin” wedding, on Sunday, October 28 as part of the celebrations of the festival. Exchanging their wedding vows was the young Russian couple, Vitaly and Kate Golovko.

At 3:00 pm, bride and groom, bridesmaids, best men, and invited guests serenaded the wedding procession to the Beau Vallon District Administration accompanied by the local “Kamtole” band playing traditional musical instruments. As with every traditional wedding, the hall was well decorated with the scenery of “La Salle Verte,” which is the islands’ traditional banquette hall.

In full swing, an adopted mother of the bride delivered a speech in honor of the bride and groom, followed by Seychelles traditional wedding songs.

Present at the event was the Seychelles Minister of Tourism and Culture, Mr Alain St.Ange, who was invited to say a few words to the bride and groom. Mr. St.Ange congratulated the couple for exchanging their vows and becoming man and wife in a ceremony forming part of the activities for 27th edition of the island’s Festival Kreol.

“There is not a better day to have gotten married than on the day of Festival Kreol. Seychelles is often called the Islands of Love. Our UNESCO Heritage Site on Praslin, the Vallee de Mai, is known as the Garden of Eden. This I am saying only to congratulate you on your decision to get married in paradise itself, and to say that you should treasure the memories of this day forever. You should also promise to each other that you will use this opportunity to mark your wedding anniversary by visiting Seychelles annually on this special day of yours. Each visit will be an even bigger success than the previous one,” said Mr. St.Ange.

Mr. St.Ange went on to express his gratitude to the Beau Vallon District Administrator Ms. Rachael Sipro, Beau Vallon CC member Miss Antoinette Rose, the Principle Secretary for the Department of Culture Miss Benjamine Rose, and the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board Mrs. Elsia Grandcourt for their assistance in making this event the success it deserved to be for Seychelles, after which he wished the newly-married couple “plenty of health and wealth.”

As in all traditional weddings, the couple was served with the liqueur Marie-Brizare, the traditional Creole cake (Maspen) with traditional jam made with pawpaw, and various other Creole traditional food and drinks. The bride and groom enjoyed a dinner of roast pork, roast chicken, with a mixture of green salads and bread. The wedding couple and the invited guests partied well into the early morning hours.

When he was invited on stage to say a few words, Mr. Golovko, the groom of the day described this day as a new beginning and went on to express his happiness by saying, “We would like to thank you for the best event in our lives. We still cannot believe it; it is like a magical sweet color dream.”

The couple knew the Seychelles well and they have seen a lot of interesting events organized in Creole style, but they have never seen a Creole traditional “Tifin” wedding before.

“It is something special and incredible,” when we decided to get married we could not even imagine that it might be like that,” said Mr. Golovko.

Mr. and Mrs. Golovko also expressed their gratitude to the Seychelles Tourism Board and to everyone who contributed in organizing this incredible and unforgettable event.

“We wish prosperity and well-being to all the Seychellois, and hope the government will do their best to keep that incomparable and admirable ‘Another World’ for the future generations as it is now. It’s great to be here – to be in paradise,” added Mr. Golovko.
