Seychelles receives from France copies of the 1814 Treaty of Paris

Seychelles receives from France copies of the 1814 Treaty of Paris ( The Treaty of Paris, dated May 30, 1814 and ratified by the Vienna Congress on the June 9, 1815, took France back to its pre-January 1, 1792.

This treaty also provided for the territories and colonies of France to be reattached to France, but Article 8 of the Treaty of Paris France handed over to the British Monarchy a number of its colonies including Ile de France and its dependencies inclusive of the Seychelles.

The document has been received through the assistance of the French Historian, Richard Touboul, from the Archives of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Copies of this 1814 Treaty of Paris document will soon go on display at the Seychelles Historical Museum.

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said as he received the documents from Richard Touboul in the presence of Ms. Benjamine Rose, the Principle Secretary for Culture, that it was important for Seychelles to receive documents concerning its past. “Today at the National Archives and at the History Museum, a group of dedicated Seychellois have their historical documentation at heart and they have created the necessary network to get documents concerning our history. As we have now received many interesting copies of documents from France, we are now working with the British High Commissioner to also receive more such documents from Great Britain,” Minister Alain St.Ange said.

The new 1814 document received from France was seen by all as an exceptional piece of the Seychelles history. “The documents cover is in full color and in it itself a real work of art. It is through this very document that France cedes the Seychelles to the British Seychelles. On the document Seychelles is written as Sechelles and was ceded along with Rodrigue as dependencies of Isle de France,” The Seychelles Minister responsible for Culture said.
