Seychelles Film Classification Unit transferred to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture

Seychelles Film Classification Unit transferred to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (Forimmediaterelease.net) The Seychelles Film Classification Unit responsible for film classification, formerly under the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications, has been transferred to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture effective September 1, 2012.

Headed by Marie-Lucie Albert, the unit now falls under the Secretariat of Ms. Benjamine Rose, the Principal Secretary of the Department of Culture. The Film Classification Unit is comprised of two other staff members (one inspector and one office assistant).

As under its former direction, the unit, based at Caravelle House, will still operate on its own with its own budget and will continue to ensure that all films are censored and are originals. It will also continue to ensure that no illegal films are being brought into the country. For persons doing so and distributing them via the various mediums such as Facebook, the unit reiterates that such transactions are illegal and should be discouraged.

One of the functions of the Unit is to register videos submitted by video hirers and exhibitors. These videos are checked for quality and later sent to the Seychelles Film Classification Board (FCB) for classification.

The Seychelles Film Classification Board, formerly chaired by Mrs. Marie-Thérèse Choppy and comprised of nine members, is currently non-operational as their mandate has expired. New Board members have yet to be submitted for the President’s approval.

In the meantime, the Culture Department is in the process of formalizing all documents relating to the transfer of the unit to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
