Seychelles has shown through their latest arts exhibition that Praslin and La Digue islands have their own pool of excellent artists

Seychelles has shown through their latest arts exhibition that Praslin and La Digue islands have their own pool of excellent artists ( Artists from the islands of Praslin and La Digue rose to the occasion when the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the National Arts Council (NAC), organized their very own Arts Exhibition at the La Reserve Hotel. “Islanders Reveal Their Talents,” as it is being referred to, showcases eighteen Praslin and La Digue artists joining together with special exhibits of their works of art and unique sculptures. This was the largest exhibition on the island. Artists have risen to the challenge and created some truly original representations of Seychelles fauna and flora, its culture, and its people.

Known, respected, and popular artists such as Raymond Dubisson, Cyril Jean, Jeff Lesperance, Rita Morel, and Alain Marie delved into their artistic sides by exhibiting oil on canvas; calligraphy consisting of mixed medium; paintings of lush green landscapes; and still-life such as flowers, figures, and places. One of the fine artworks which drew the attention of the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St. Ange, who visited the exhibition, was the painting of Cyril Jean.

Cyril has one of the most amazing techniques of ink painting. His painting theme is green landscapes and endemic bird species of Seychelles islands, which is very much on display in his collection of paintings in the exhibition. Impressively, Cyril has never studied fine arts but had become a self-taught artist with a new and unique technique of painting with a special ink pen. Cyril said that “one should not be taught to paint. It should be a spontaneous reflection of one’s senses and demonstration of its imagination.”

Another prominent artist in the exhibition is Sheila Markham, who explores the visual language of abstract and figure composition techniques. In her paintings, Sheila demonstrated her perception about Seychelles’ culture and fauna. Her abstract paintings are a true demonstration of her own ideas molded with colors.

After touring the exhibition in the presence of the elected members of the National Assembly, Natasha Esther and Marc Volcere and the District Administrators of Grand Anse and Baie St. Anne, Peter Pomeroy, the General Manager of La Reserve Hotel and the Special Advisor to the Minister, Raymonde Onezime, Minister St.Ange said that he is “pleasantly surprised with the artistic talents on Praslin and La Digue.” He has thanked Mr. Pomeroy of the La Reserve hotel for opening its gallery to exhibit the works of these artists saying that “Praslin and La Digue has a lot of great talents that needed to be nurtured, valued, and put to the fore.”

The arts exhibition, organized as part of the 2012 edition of the Arts Festival, is featured on the Facebook page of La Reserve Hotel at:!/LaReserveHotelSeychelles . Online viewers can vote for their best paintings which will be sent into a draw.
