Ameer Ebrahim – a young Seychellois student who makes his mark in Australia ( Ameer Ebrahim of Mahe in the Seychelles is a new graduate in Bachelor of Marine Science from Griffith University in Queensland, Australia, with a specialization in Marine Ecology.

Ameer said that he realized the importance of the rich marine life on the Seychelles economy and for its tourism industry, and he wanted to be better prepared to play his part in its preservation. This week, he was part of the graduation ceremony at the Gold Coast Exhibition Center in Queensland, Australia, and received his degree in the presence of the university’s finest achievers and of Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who was also on the Gold Coast.

Through their Wildlife Clubs and classroom education, the Seychellois, from an early age, are taught to better understand their environment and are urged to protect their natural and pristine setting. The island’s government, on their part, is listed as being the first to have declared over half of their total land area as protected national parks.

Ameer Ebrahim has engaged in industry placements in Australia working alongside Australia’s leading shark research expert and has undertaken projects for the Gold Coast City Council relating to the rehabilitation and preservation of mangrove sites.

Speaking after his graduation ceremony, Ameer Ebrahim said that he was thankful to Minister Peter Sinon, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Fisheries, and to the Seychelles Fishing Authority, for all their support and encouragement.

The young Seychellois has immediately commenced his Honors in Marine Science and also plans on completing his PhD before returning to the Seychelles to work for his country.
