PEPY Joins Forces with Asian University for Women to Offer Scholarships to Cambodian Students

PEPY Joins Forces with Asian University for Women to Offer Scholarships to Cambodian Students ( PEPY, a non-profit humanitarian aid organization and tour company working to improve education in Cambodia, has been chosen as the in-country partner to assist The Asian University for Women (AUW) to recruit students for full scholarships to their new international university in Chittagong, Bangladesh. PEPY will lead a national recruitment campaign in Cambodia to select at least 10 qualified women to receive scholarships to the Access Academy and BA/MA program at AUW.

AUW attracts highly talented female students from different economic, cultural, religious, and geographical areas of Asia. Its graduates will become skilled and innovative professionals, service-oriented leaders in the businesses and communities in which they work and live. The University, slated to open in 2008, will be an unprecedented institution of higher education, international in scope and committed to serving women in Asia from all backgrounds, with a particular focus on women from marginalized and underserved communities.

PEPY, along with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in Cambodia, expects to recruit through the fall in an extensive campaign touching both rural and urban areas. “This is an incredible opportunity for young women in Cambodia to gain experience and become leaders in their field” says PEPY/AUW Country Coordinator Maryann Bylander. PEPY focuses on increasing access to quality educational programs at primary and secondary schools in Cambodia, working with government-run schools in two rural provinces. This will be PEPY’s first partnership with a university-level institution.

Organizers expect that up to half of the student body at AUW will come from materially and educationally deprived backgrounds. To compensate for gaps in their prior learning and assist in the transition period, AUW offers an on-campus pre-matriculation yearlong “access program” for such students, providing rigorous initial training, self-directed studies and peer tutoring.

As a center of excellence, the University will provide unparalleled opportunities for women to become leaders in emerging fields including: Information Technology, Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development, Management, Education and Public Policy.
