WTTC tribute to Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge ( Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge, previously Colin Marshall, was a Founding Member of the World Travel&Tourism Council (WTTC) and a man who devoted his entire career to the travel and tourism industry.

He began his career in 1951 with the Orient Steam Navigation Company, before spending 23 years in vehicle and rental leasing, initially with Hertz and subsequently with Avis. He was appointed CEO of British Airways in 1983, and over the next 21 years played a fundamental role in the privatization of the airline and its subsequent business transformation as “The World’s Favorite Airline.”

Marshall was appointed Chairman of British Airways in 1993, a position he held until he retired from the airline in 2004.

From May 1996 to July 1998, Marshall was President of the Confederation of British Industry and chaired the CBI International Advisory Board. He also held senior non-executive positions at Invensys plc, Inchcape plc, HSBC Holdings plc, Pirelli UK plc and Nomura International plc, among others.

From 2005 to 2006, Lord Marshall was also Chairman of the national British tourist board, VisitBritain. His successor is WTTC member Christopher Rodrigues CBE.

Fellow WTTC Founding Member, James D Robinson III, then Chairman&CEO of American Express, said of Lord Marshall: “Colin was instrumental in the initial formation of WTTC and played a key role throughout his association. He was a unique voice and dedicated believer in the power of the industry's message of economic development and job creation around the world.”

David Scowsill, President&CEO, WTTC said: “Lord Marshall was a travel and tourism industry titan. His vision helped to create WTTC in 1990 and in a career spanning 60 years, he was a tireless advocate for the economic and social contribution of our industry. He will be sadly missed by his colleagues at WTTC.

“Tributes and condolences are coming in from friends and business colleagues around the world.”

There will be a memorial service later in the year.
