The International Press Institute World Congress kicks off in Trinidad and Tobago

The International Press Institute World Congress kicks off in Trinidad and Tobago (Forimmediaterelease.net) The Trinidad and Tobago Convention Bureau is pleased to announce that for the first time, the International Press Institute (IPI) World Congress will be held in the Caribbean and only for the second time in the Americas. This highly prestigious conference kicked-off on Saturday, June 23, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Trinidad, and features a prolific group of speakers and panellists, including former editor of the UK Guardian and CNN International journalist, Jim Clancy.

The theme of this year’s event is “Media in a Challenging World: A 360 Degree Perspective” and provides a platform for more than 300 journalists from around the world to examine the challenges, concerns, and opportunities facing the media, not only in the Caribbean but in the rest of the Americas and around the globe.

The Congress was opened by the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, George Maxwell Richard, who delivered the keynote address. Other speakers included Jacqueline Charles, Caribbean Correspondent at The Miami Herald USA and Narasimhan Ravi, Director of The Hindu, India and Ahmad Ibrahim, head of the investigative unit of the Al Jazeera network.

Scheduled to end on Tuesday, June 26, the IPI is more than 60 years old and boasts of members in 120 countries who have as their goal to preserve freedom of the press.

This particular Congress was organized in conjunction with the Association of Caribbean Media Workers and the Publishers and Broadcasters Association. The Trinidad and Tobago Convention Bureau sat on the Local Organizing Committee in an advisory capacity.

In addition to a compelling program of timely topics, a one-day corruption workshop for established and aspiring investigative reporters, a gala dinner, and an awards evening, the Congress also features a range of festive social functions, including sightseeing tours and a cultural reception.

Sponsored by the Convention Bureau, the tours and cultural reception highlight Trinidad and Tobago’s diverse cultural and culinary delights and present a prime opportunity to showcase the sites, attractions, and culture of the destination to foreign visitors from more than 28 countries.
