DON’T JUST STAND BY! ( WTM Chairman’s Appeal to Support
Just a Drop at WTM 2007

How can the international travel and tourism industry stand by and watch 5,000 children die every day because they are denied clean water?

Fiona Jeffery, Chairman of World Travel Market and founder of the water-aid charity Just a Drop said that the situation remains desperate in many parts of the world, even though the cost of installing a protected well can be as little as £3,000.

She posed the question as she launched this year’s Just a Drop campaign for World Travel Market 2007 at ExCeL London, which aims to raise much needed funds for water and sanitation projects worldwide.

Jeffery is encouraging as many of the 5,500 exhibitors as possible from 202 representative countries and regions to raise money during World Travel Market (Monday 12 – Thursday 15 November), either on their stands or at the hundreds of scheduled exhibitor events throughout the week.

“Every 17 seconds a child dies from terrible water borne diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera and bilharzia”, said Jeffery.

“Just a Drop was formed on behalf of the global industry and we have proven ourselves very different from other charitable causes.

“Thanks to our growing band of volunteers, a minimal amount of money raised goes to administration.

“Just a Drop helps the forgotten people.

“Those children and their families that others have overlooked. They are the poorest of the poor and have little hope of life if Just a Drop does not come to their aid.”

Jeffery said that she was appealing to exhibitors and visitors to support this year’s campaign at World Travel Market.

“Money is raised across the world year-round, but inevitably World Travel Market is a crucial time to help swell the fund account.”
