PEPY Initiates Bike Lending Program in Stung Treng

PEPY Initiates Bike Lending Program in Stung Treng ( PEPY, an adventure tour operator and humanitarian aid organization, will launch a new Bike Lending program at The PEPY Friends School, in the northeast province of Stung Treng, Cambodia. The program makes education more accessible for incoming 7th grade students who otherwise may have trouble commuting to secondary school. Through the program, bicycles are lent to students starting 7th grade. Upon graduation of 9th grade, the students become owners of the bikes. This Bike Lending program is a part of PEPY’s Bike-to-School project, established in 2006 in Cambodia.

On a visit to The PEPY Friends School, PEPY Interim Executive Director Maryann Bylander commented, “This was a program the ministry and the community have wanted for several years, but could never create without the funding.” Working together with school administrators and community members, PEPY is bringing this program to life. The Bike-to-School program began at The PEPY Ride School in Chanleas Dai, Siem Reap province, and has now expanded to include the new lending model in Stung Treng. Teachers and PEPY staff will evaluate the impact the bicycles have on access to education through a comparison of attendance levels.

PEPY staff and school faculty will present the bikes at a ceremony in early October, planned to coincide with the start of the academic year. Funding for the Bike-to-School initiatives comes from donations, fundraising efforts, and profits from the PEPY Ride’s partner organization, PEPY Tours. Each participant who travels to Cambodia with PEPY Tours pays a tour fee, along with a separate, tax deductible, donation to support the ongoing humanitarian projects in Cambodia such as PEPY Ride.

The first PEPY Tour in December 2005 brought volunteer-minded travelers from around the world to cycle across Cambodia. During the trip, they visited schools and orphanages and spread the PEPY message, “Protect the Earth. Protect Yourself." With money raised through this initial cycling trip, The PEPY Ride was established as an NGO and now implements a range of educational programs.

PEPY Tour itineraries range from high intensity multi-week cycle trips to week-long volunteer projects focusing on a specific developing area. Each trip is designed to introduce participants to development work in Cambodia and provide an exciting, authentic experience of Cambodian culture and hospitality. The second volunteer tour to the PEPY Friends School is scheduled for March 2008.
