China’s Beijing Zoo delegation pledged exchanges with the Seychelles

China’s Beijing Zoo delegation pledged exchanges with the Seychelles ( A high delegation from the Chinese Zoo in Beijing has called on the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, during their working visit to Seychelles.

The Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture thanked the Chinese delegation for their courtesy visit, and he discussed Seychelles’ futuristic project to build a marine aquarium in the country.

“The Seychelles Ocean has a considerable number of unique and spectacular fish and maritime species but only a small percentage of our population and of our visitors enjoy the sport of diving to be able to appreciate our underwater world. The marine aquarium will serve its educational purpose, and in the spirit of mutual cooperation between China and Seychelles, the China business community is invited to come to the Seychelles to work with us to enable us to realize this project,” Minister St.Ange said.

The Seychelles Minister of Tourism and Culture has also spoken about the island’s celebration this year of the 150th anniversary of the first Chinese settlement to arrive in Seychelles.

“This celebration is an appropriate moment for Seychelles and China to spell out their special relations and to seek new grounds for future cooperation. To mark this special year, seventy-five Chinese couples will be in the Seychelles to celebrate their wedding in July. This special event will bring more visibility to the Seychelles, and both Seychelles and China can use this event to firmly record the 150th anniversary of the Chinese settlement in the Seychelles,” Minister St.Ange said.

The Chinese delegation, which comprises animals and plants experts of the Beijing Zoo and journalists from the Beijing newspaper, is in Seychelles to better understand the giant tortoise’s natural environment. During the 2010 World Expo held in Shanghai, China, Seychelles President James Michel handed a pair of the Seychelles giant tortoises to China. The tortoises are still in quarantine at the Beijing Zoo, but arrangements are now being made to present the Seychelles giant tortoises to the Chinese public from April 11, 2012.

The head of the Chinese delegation, Wang Chongqing, who is the Secretary of the CPC Beijing Zoo Committee, has “pledged future exchanges between the Beijing Zoo and the Seychelles for the protection of its fauna and flora.”

The Seychelles Minister said that the “pair of giant tortoises donated to the Beijing Zoo remains a symbol for a long-term bond of friendship between Seychelles and China.”

The Chinese delegation left Seychelles on April 11, 2012.
