Marilyn Carlson Nelson Inducted Into ASTA Hall of Fame ( Las Vegas, Sept. 11, 2007 — ASTA honored Marilyn Carlson Nelson, chairman and CEO of the Carlson Companies, with its Travel Hall of Fame Award. The award was presented during ASTA’s annual meeting at THETRADESHOW in Las Vegas. The 2007 Travel Industry Awards are sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car. The Hall of Fame award is one of the highest honors that ASTA presents to individuals.

“Marilyn Carlson Nelson is the consummate travel professional, one who has been steeped in every facet of the industry since childhood,” said Cheryl Hudak, CTC, ASTA president and CEO. “Her passion and commitment, not only to her family’s business, but the industry at large, shines strong and clear in everything she does. The success of the Carlson Companies under her leadership is a testament to this.”

Forbes magazine has regularly named Carlson Nelson as one of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” She is on the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council, and in 2004 co-chaired the Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. In November 2005 she was named vice chair of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board. She is a past national chair of the Travel Industry Association of America, and has served as a delegate to the White House Conference on Tourism and on the board of the U.S. National Tourism Organization. She currently serves on the Singapore Tourism Board as well as the boards of Exxon Mobil Corp., the Mayo Clinic Foundation and the Board of Overseers of the University of Minnesota’s Curtis L. Carlson School of Management. She is also a member of the Business Roundtable.

Among her many honors, she holds the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship from the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, and the king and queen of Sweden bestowed the Swedish-American of the Year Award upon Carlson Nelson in 2003.

Additionally, she was given the Icon Award by the National Business Travel Association (2006); received the 18th Annual Lucia Trade Award from the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce (2005); was named “Business Woman of the Year” by the U.S. Commerce Department’s Small Business Administration (2005); was given the Hospitality Industry Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hospitality Sales&Marketing Association International (2004); was presented with the ATHENA Award by the ATHENA Foundation (2004); was elected into the Sales&Marketing Executives International Hall of Fame (2003); was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award by International Hotel Investment Forum, Berlin, Germany (2002); received FIRST Magazine’s Responsible Capitalism Award (2001); was given the Cutting Edge Award by American Hotel&Lodging Association (2001); and was named “Hospitality Executive of the Year” by Penn State Hotel and Restaurant Society (2000).

Carlson Nelson recently announced her intentions to step down as CEO of Carlson by February 2008, but remain chairman of the company. This move, however, is not a retirement and Carlson Nelson plans to remain involved with the company. Outside of her industry, she serves on the boards of Exxon Mobil Corp., Mayo Clinic Foundation and the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy.
