The Lord of The Rings Musical At World Travel Market
THE LORD OF THE RINGS, the spectacular first major stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic trilogy, receiving its British and European premiere this summer in London, is the focus of a glittering World Travel Market theatre evening on the opening day, Monday 12 November. The evening is in association with Dewynters, the UK entertainment industry's leading full-service agency.
The ‘journey’ to Middle-earth at the famous Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London is in aid of Just a Drop, the water aid charity founded by World Travel Market on behalf of the international travel and tourism industry eight years ago. Just a Drop provides clean water to children and their families, often in remote communities worldwide.
To date it has raised just over £750,000 and helped 800,000 people in 24 countries.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS is the biggest, most ambitious and lavish theatrical production ever staged. The mammoth £25 million show is based on Tolkien’s literary masterpiece about a Hobbit named Frodo and his legendary quest to rid Middle-earth of evil.
Tickets cost £95 per person and include a best seat in the house, champagne, canapés and desserts and a gift bag with a souvenir programme. At the end of the evening, delegates will also be able to meet some of the cast and get autographs.
Creation of the charity theatre evening on the first day of this year’s World Travel Market follows an earlier partnership between World Travel Market and Kevin Wallace, producer of THE LORD OF THE RINGS.
He said:” We are delighted that THE LORD OF THJE RINGS is coming home to where it virtually all began – World Travel Market. It was here that we initially premiered some of the music at the opening ceremony two years ago.
“It promises to be quite a night with the added bonus of helping to raise money for Just a Drop.
“The scale of the story has demanded ingenious design and combines text, physical theatre, music and spectacle.”
Fiona Jeffery, Chairman of World Travel Market said she was delighted that THE LORD OF THE RINGS would be offering a not-to-be-missed opportunity for delegates to see the musical at a very special VIP evening.
“THE LORD OF THE RINGS is unlike any other musical experience and we greatly appreciate Kevin Wallace’s agreement to work with us once again.
“The money we raise for Just a Drop is desperately needed. A staggering 1.8 million children die every year from water related diseases”, continued Jeffery, “and Just a Drop has been able to make a real difference because we ensure the money is directed to where people need it most. Sadly though, there is still much work to be done as 5000 children die every day: that’s 1 child every 17 seconds.”
Malcolm Storry, best known for his many seasons at the Royal Shakespeare Company and who recently starred in The Royal Hunt of the Sun at the National Theatre, will play 'Gandalf'.
James Loye will recreate the role of 'Frodo Baggins', which he played in Toronto last year. Laura Michelle Kelly, who won an Olivier Award for originating the title role in Mary Poppins in London, will play 'Galadriel'. Michael Therriault will play 'Gollum', the role he originated in Toronto, winning the Dora Award for 'Best Actor'.
Peter Howe will recreate his role as 'Sam', for which he received a Dora Award nomination. Jérôme Pradon, who has starred in many West End musicals including Les Misérables, will play 'Aragorn'.
