Middle East traffic booming, with room to grow further

Middle East traffic booming, with room to grow further ( Middle East air traffic growth (RPKs) surged by 18.8% in Jul-07 – three times the global average – and the rate is accelerating. The Jul-07 figure took the growth rate in the first seven months of 2007 to 16.8%.
The gap between Middle East traffic growth and the rest of the world is also widening, with Jul-07 traffic some 12.9 ppts above the global average, compared to 7.7 ppts in Jul-06 and 3.8 ppts in Jul-05.

The Middle East region’s airlines also have room to manoeuvre as significant amounts of fresh capacity join the region's fleets over the short term. Another advantage is that airport capacity is also less constrained in the Middle East than other regions, permitting much greater scheduling freedom.

Global average passenger load factors reached an astonishing 81% in Jul-07, with Europe and North American carriers flying at record highs, with 82.1% and 85.6% average load factors for the month, respectively. Middle East carrier load factors are on average a couple of points below the global average, which should help them continue to attract passengers away from airlines that are experiencing tight capacity. At 80%+ load factors, many would-be travellers are turned away.
