Annapolis – Travel to Asia has seen remarkable growth over the last year, with China, India and several other Asian countries setting new records for growth in U.S. outbound travel. A recent study released by the Department of Commerce for the United States of America showed India's growth leaping up 8% over 2005's record1.
Travel to China increased by 9.6% in 2006 with 58% stating the purpose of their trip was for leisure2. The average aged person traveling to China is between 45 – 64 years old3. Over the past year China has received an unprecedented amount of global attention. With the upcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing the Chinese tourism industry has begun expanded marketing efforts to promote adventure tours, luxury accommodations, exotic cuisine, historic and cultural sites, friendly people and amazing shopping, all at very reasonable prices.
In 2006, 63.7 million U.S. residents traveled abroad, a 5% increase from 2005. All of the increase, 30.1 million, was due to overseas travel. Out of the 30.1 million, 21% traveled to Asia, with 18% of the 21% being solely for leisure/vacation travel.1 With the predominant share of travel to Asia for leisure, coupled with the continued rising cost of traveling to Europe and the Caribbean, it is no wonder that Asia is the most rapidly growing destination for Americans seeking new and unexplored destinations.
What are U.S. travelers discovering? Asia is more than just exotic food and great shopping; it is teeming with cultural and historical sites that many people have only dreamed about visiting. Asia is also home to some of the world's most alluring and beautiful beaches. India has a continuous stretch of 4,163 miles of luxurious beaches, and is the proud home to Kerala, “one of the 10 paradises of the world" according to National Geographic. The South China Sea boasts numerous islands of a tropical paradise with first class accommodations, luxury spa treatments and delicious food and night life abound in plenty. Americans are steadily broadening their travel and Asia is certainly one of the brightest spots on their horizon.

Realizing the potential for new travel several Indian airlines and tourism groups have banded together to begin offering luxury tours and packages, along with a campaign sponsored by the Indian Tourism Office, “Incredible India!", whose sole purpose is to educate and promote travel. With this sort of strategic marketing it is no wonder that India is now becoming a hot new destination for the U.S. traveler.
