The Retreat Cup – a charity football tournament for Tanzanian children in the spirit of conservation and community development

The Retreat Cup – a charity football tournament for Tanzanian children in the spirit of conservation and community development (Forimmediaterelease.net) For the first time we organized The Retreat Cup, a charity football tournament for children from the Selous region in memory of our beloved father Prof. Hans Grob who loved Selous so enormously. Our idea was to use the joy and team spirit of football to bring villages with restricted access to education together and help to build schools and football pitches for the community. More than 500 children from 8 different villages and approx. 5000 spectators took part at this tournament, held in Kisaki. Each village or community was sponsored by one Swiss company that provided sport equipment for the players and allocated funds to be used for educational projects and the construction of football pitches. Due to the enormous success of the event we are already looking forward to the second Retreat Cup in 2012 and also want to say thank you to all the sponsors. The event was followed by a long discussion with the elders of the villages, expressing all their problems in the area of health, water, electricity and jobs.

The Retreat, located in Northern Selous, is a twelve-suite exquisite hideaway that offers complete seclusion in the heart of remote bush lands. The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected wildlife sanctuary in Africa and is widely accredited as being the most pristine wilderness and one of the “secrets of Africa”. Elephants, lions, black rhinos, leopards, wild dogs, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles and more than 400 different birds can be seen among many other wildlife. Guests at The Retreat are invited to share a rare intact ecosystem of Africa which is perfectly untouched and can be explored in many different ways.
