Zambia scoops top awards at tourism expo

Zambia scoops top awards at tourism expo (Forimmediaterelease.net) The Zambia Tourism Board participated in the INDABA tourism exhibition in Durban, South Africa, held from May 7-11, 2011.

INDABA is the largest tourism marketing event on the African calendar and one of the top three “must visit” events of its kinds on the global calendar. It showcases the widest variety of Southern Africa’s best tourism products and attracts international visitors and media from across the world. INDABA is owned by South African Tourism and managed by Witch and Wizard Creative (Pty) Ltd.

For 2 years in a row, INDABA has won the award for Africa’s Best Travel and Tourism Show. This award was presented by the Association of World Travel Awards.

INDABA is a 4-day trade event that attracts well over 13,000 delegates from travel and tourism, as well as related industries.

Zambia was represented by 33 private-sector members of the travel industry composed of lodges, airlines, hotels, ground handlers, and travel agencies. The Zambia stand proved very popular with international buyers most of whom had pre-arranged appointments with the Zambian team. Among the notable visitors to the Zambia stand was Mr. Richard Quest, TV anchor on CNN.

The INDABA also had a number of key events. Among the events was the South African Airways travel and tourism awards ceremony hosted by the Chairman of South African Airways, Ms. Cheryl Carolus. The awards were given to the agencies with the highest volume of sales in the regions.

The award for the Best Agent in Southern Africa and Ocean Islands was presented to Voyagers Zambia. This was an important feat as it exemplifies exceptional performance, surpassing agents from busy destinations such as South Africa and Mauritius. In addition, it is also an indicator of the ground-handling capacity that Voyagers has and will serve to instill confidence in Zambia as a destination in the source markets.

The other notable event was the Good Safari Guide awards hosted at Moyo Restaurant at Ushaka in Durban on May 6, 2011. This gala ceremony was attended by key personnel in the safari industry from mainly the United Kingdom and Africa. The Good Safari Guide awards are held annually and given to deserving establishments and individuals in the tourism industry and are voted for by over 340 safari specialists from around the world.

The awards aim to recognize excellence among the very best safari lodges and operators in Africa. Nominations are received from over a thousand luxury travel professionals, as well as from readers of prime lifestyle magazines such as Conde Nast Traveler, Tatler, Brides, and Travel Africa magazine, which reflects the pedigree of the readers making the nominations.

The winning nominees for Zambia were as follows:

Best Safari Property in Africa:
Chiawa Camp – lower Zambezi

Best Safari Property in Southern Africa:
Chiawa Camp – lower Zambezi

Best Safari House in Africa:
Chongwe River House – lower Zambezi

Best Personal Contribution to Safari Tourism:

Zambia received nominations in 8 out of the 23 categories. This is testimony that the Zambian tourism industry can hold its own and compete against the best in Africa. It further serves as an indicator that the Zambian tourism industry represents very good value and exceptional standards.

The Zambia Tourism Board intends to use these awards as a strong selling point in the source and emerging markets.
