Seychelles is proud of newly-appointed Seychellois Director in the United Nations ( The Secretary General of the United Nations earlier this week appointed Seychellois Mr. Jonathan Lucas as Director of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), in Turin, Italy.

Following the appointment, President James Michel sent Mr. Lucas a congratulatory message in which he spoke of the pride and joy the announcement brings to the government and people of Seychelles:

“This appointment is indeed a victory for Seychelles. Every Seychellois rejoices when a son of our islands achieves such recognition from the community of nations. Your appointment is further reflection on the dynamic role that Seychelles is taking in international relations despite its small size, as well as a further testimony to the success of our people-centered development policies.

“We have every confidence that in your new functions, you will continue to serve the common values that we all instill in the United Nations for the benefit of all countries.”

Mr. Lucas started his professional career in 1982 with the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Switzerland and joined the United Nations in 1984 as Associate Social Affairs Officer in the then United Nations Division of Narcotic Drugs. Subsequently, he served in various capacities, including Legal and First Officer for the policymaking organizations of the United Nations International Drug Control Program and as Senior Program Management Officer in the Office of the Executive Director and Director-General of the then Office on Drug Control and Crime Prevention in Vienna.

From 1998 to 2004, Mr. Lucas served as Chief of the Commissions Secretariat Section, encompassing the functions of Secretary, Commission on Narcotic Drugs, and Secretary, Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. From November 2004 to February 2010, Mr. Lucas was Representative of the UNODC Regional Office for Southern Africa, Pretoria. Since February 2010, he has acted as Secretary of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and Chief of the INCB Secretariat.

Mr. Lucas holds a diploma from the University of Lyon in France, a BA degree from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England, an MA degree from Acadia University in Canada, and a PhD degree in International Law and Economics from the Graduate Institute for International Studies (IUHEI) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr. Lucas is expected to take up his new assignment on Monday, May 16, 2011.
