Maritim Hotels Promote Environmentally-Friendly Hotel Practices
Regarding the use of energy, Maritim Hotels choose the most energy-efficient methods available. Maritim uses energy-saving lamps in 80 percent of their light fixtures. (Conventional lighting is only used where a specific atmosphere cannot be achieved by the new technology.) Time switches have been installed everywhere from the bathrooms to the corridors. As an example of the effectiveness of these efforts, Maritim Hotel Berlin lowered their electricity consumption by approximate 30 percent in the past two years. With regard to heating, some hotels are heated with natural gas rather than with the scarcer resource, oil. Other hotels produce their own energy. Hotels in sun destinations such as Tenerife use solar collectors on the hotel roof to heat the water needed inside.
Water is also used very carefully. A variety of water-saving devices are found in all hotels such as flow restrictors in the showers, water-saving push button for flushing toilets and delimiter water taps, which let the water pearl out softly instead of splashing.
Waste management is also the rule at Maritim. Waste separation is carefully maintained, with each recyclable item going into a separate container. Thus, glass can be processed into glass again and paper into paper, without having a negative effect on the environment.
The management ensures that the staff of each hotel is familiar with the importance of environmental issues. Recently the Maritim Hotel Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr region, participated in a regional eco-profit coaching program to learn how to take care of the environment while also saving on their budget. They learned about such measures as using a collecting tank for unused pool water and using special filters to clean the water and feed it back into the pool. Raising the temperature for drinks by two degrees centigrade was a simple energy saver that saved 1,050-kilowatt hours of energy per year.
