( DUBAI, U.A.E., 1st August 2007 – Emirates has won the much-coveted Skytrax 2007 Best Airline Inflight Entertainment Award for the third year in a row. The award is a result of the World Airline Survey conducted between August 2006 and June 2007, and is based on the responses of 14 million passengers of 93 different nationalities.

Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, was fulsome in his praise saying: “Emirates seem to have their name carved firmly onto this Best Inflight Entertainment Award and we congratulate them for their repeated success in this 2007 survey result."

Emirates has made massive investments to provide passengers the very best inflight entertainment, since the time, way back in 1992, it became the first airline in the world to offer personal TV screens in all classes on its entire fleet.

In 2003, Emirates launched the ice system, an acronym for information communications and entertainment, offering over 500 channels of entertainment and offering passengers more choice than ever before. Conceived in-house, Emirates’ unique ice system expanded the traditional entertainment-only product, offering much more – seatback sms and email services, and live text news updates throughout the flight.

Emirates recently upped the ante further when it unveiled its cutting-edge ice Digital Widescreen system. The system features many more firsts in the airline industry – including unique wireless handset controllers in premium classes that allow passengers to select entertainment, seat positions, lighting and massage functions.

Mike Simon, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President Corporate Communications said: “This is indeed a proud moment for us at Emirates – topping one of the most fiercely-contested of all categories three times in a row. It validates our insistence on inflight innovations and significant investments that ensure our passengers can relax with an incredible choice of entertainment, communicate with their businesses and loved ones, and have a thoroughly engaging time while flying Emirates. It’s also a happy coincidence that the award comes on the heels of unveiling our ice Digital Widescreen system. But of course we do not intend to rest on our laurels – we are committed to continuous enhancements.”

Currently, ice offers more than 600 channels of movies, music, television, games and programmes in English, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Chinese, Japanese and other languages. The new ice Digital Widescreen will offer even more movies, TV and audio as well as over 100 games to play. New features include My USB – the ability to view photos and pdf files, and My Playlist – the ability to create personal compilations from nearly 10,000 tracks of available music. The largest wide-screen televisions in the airline world in all three classes; an advanced ice TV remote control; a handset with a qwerty keyboard that doubles up as a satellite telephone and games controller; laptop charging points; and a 3-D animated Airshow round off the new features on the system.

ice is available on over half of Emirates’ passenger fleet, offering travellers significantly more inflight entertainment choice than any other airline. The ice Digital Widescreen system first debuted on the Emirates Dubai-Paris service. Over the next 18 months, Emirates will receive 24 new aircraft fitted with this new product.

The Skytrax Awards for Airline Excellence is among the most prominent recognitions of outstanding quality excellence for product and customer service delivery across the airline industry. These independent aviation awards recognise front-line service realities and are considered a fair measure of actual product and service being delivered.
